IMPROVEMENT IN WOVEN BAGS.

Specification forming part of Letters PatentNo. 56,081, dated July 3, 1866.

To all whom 'it may concern.-

Beit known that I, CHARLES MOORE, Sr., of Trenton, Mercer county, State of N ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements ,in Bags or Sacks for Grain and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science 4to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements Without further invention or experiment. f

The nature of my invention and improvement in bags or sacks consists in increasing the filling or weft of the cloth gradually from the place of tying, near the top, to the bottom, to make the bag thickest, heaviest, and strongest where it is subject to the greatest strain and the most Wear, and at the same time it makes or leaves the bag thin Where it is gathered or folded for tying; also, in combining with the above a thick .welt or edge around the mouth of the bag, to prevent it from being torn and save the need of hemming and prevent it from slipping out of the string when tied, by weaving in the illing or weft very close, or by weaving in filling or weft that is larger Vor stronger than in the other part of the bag.

In the accompanying drawing a plan and section of my improved bag is represented. A is the top or mouth, and B is the bottom, which may be woven together, lif the bag is woven whole, in the manner Well knownand practiced by weavers. In this bag the weft or lilling is gradually increased from the place of tying, near the top, to the bottom. This is effected by driving the filling closer and closer as the weaving progresses, or beating it up harder and harder until the length of the bag is woven, when the warps may be sprung, so as to Weave the two sides together and form the bottom of the bag without sewing.

In weaving my improved bags, or cloth for them, I Weave a thick welt or edge for the top or mouth ofthe bag by weaving or beating the filling very close into the warp, or by. weaving in a stronger or larger thread of filling, thereby making a strong edge around the mouth of the bag to save the need of hemlning, prevent it from being torn, and from slipping out of the string when tied. This improvement makes bags for ordinary use more reliable, convenient, and capable oi'performing an increased amount of service without increasing the quantity of yarn or material in a bag of a given size.

W'hat I claim as myinvention and improvement in bags or sacks is-.

l. Increasing the illing or Wei't of the cloth gradually from the place of tyin g, near the top, to the bottom, to make the bag thickest, heaviest,` and strongest Where it is subject to the greatest strain and the most wear, substantially as described.

2. In combination with a bag woven gradually thicker from the place-ot tying to the bottom, the thick welt or edge around the mouth or open end of the bag, formed substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
