Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEX. C. WADE, OF PARIS, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEO. THILMAN.
I MPRQVED WASHING-MACHiNE.
` Specification forming part of `LettersVlatent N o. 57,052, dated August 7 1866.
To all whom it `may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER O. WADE, of Paris, Edgar county, Illinois, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in WashingMachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention consists in such an arrangement of mechanical devices as to enable clothes to be thoroughly cleansed of all impurities in a few minutes, and` without any liability of injuring the most delicate fabrics; and the machine is s o constructed as `to be operated in the most eiiectivemanner with va slight exertion ot' force, while the operative parts can be removed in a few moments whenever it is desirable. p
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical transverse section ota washingmachine embodying my improvements, and
y Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the batter.
The tub of my washing-machine consists of a rectangular box, A, resting upon feet B B', and furnished with a lid, C, which lid is hinged to the box at a and isheld securely closed by the button c. The lidis provided with a slot, D, while its under side has attached to it the downWardly-projecti ng cleats E E", which bear against the inner sides of the tub'A.
F is a batten tirmly attached to the lid O and cleats E E', and said hatten affords fournal-bearings for the rock-shaft G ot' the double batter H, which consists of two series of rods, I and J.
Adapted to it snugly wit-hin the bottom of the tub A is a removable frame, whose ends L lare iirmly connected together by side pieces,
N N', and journaled `within the ends L ot' said removable frame are a series of rollers, O O, 85e., which are arranged in an arc of a circle concentric with the journal-bearings of the rock-shaft G. These rollers may be constructed of wood, india-rubber, or any other suitable material, and a greater or less number may be employed, depending upon the size of the machine.
P is the lever by which the machine is operated, and said lever is Aconnected to the rock.
shaft G by the arm R,`which vibrates within i the slot D. Y
Operation: The lid O is first opened, and the tub A filled with `the hot suds to a suitable height, after which the clothes are inserted in the tub and the lid closed and locked down by means of the button c. The operator now proceeds to elevate and depress the lever P, which causes a vibration of rock-shaft G and double-winged batter H, thus drawing' the clothes alternately back and forth over the rollers O O, &c., and this rubbing contact ot' the clothes with said rollers loosens all dirt and impurities in a very short space Vof time; and without tearing oft' buttons or injuring the most delicate fabrics.
The greater specitc gravityof the dirt extracted lfrom the clothes compels it to fall through the interstices between the rollers O 'and to settle at the bottom of the vessel, by
which arrangement the clothes are constantly immersed in a body of clean water.
The machine being covered with a lid, there is no liability ot' the operator being injured by the steam or hot suds, however rapidly the machine may be worked, and the arm R, strik- -ing alternately against either end of the slot I), limits the stroke of the lever. After the washing has been performed the clothes can be removed by turning the button c around, so as to liberate the lid, after which the removable frameL can be lifted out and the entire machine thoroughly dried.
I claim herein as new and of my inventionl. The provision, in a washing-machine, ot' the double batter H, consisting of the two ries of rods I and J, and pivoted to permit a swinging motion, substantially as described and set forth.
2. The double batter` H I J, when journaled to the lid C, in combination with the remova-V ble roller-frame L, the whole being` arranged and operating in the manner herein explained and set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand. y K
ALEXANDER C. WADE. Witnesses:
GEO. THEMAN, GEO. DOLE.
