Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JOHN,ROUSE, OF PORT GIBSON, NEW YORK.
- IMPROVED ROOFING MATERIAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,484, dated October 2, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN ROUSE, of Port Gibson, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and make use of the same.
This invention relates to a tile produced of lime-and-sand mortar in suitable molds, which are lined with cloth or paper to prevent the mortar from adhering to the mold, so that the tiles, when dried, can be readily removed from the mold. Said tiles are made with beveled edges, whereby their removal from the molds is facilitated, and a joint is obtained which can be readilyfilled with mortar. The tiles thus prepared are saturated with coal-tar, asphaltum, or petroleum, or any other substance which fills the pores of the mortar and prevents it from absorbin g any water when placed in a horizontal rate it in coal-tar, asphaltum, or petroleum, and finally dry again, when the tile is ready for use.
In laying down my tile I make a mortar as above described, and spread a thin coat on the roof-boards. Then I place the tile'the largest side down, thus producing a V-shaped joint between the adjoining tiles, which I fill with mortar made of coal-tar and sand.
By spreading the mortar 011 the roof-board a uniform bearing is given to the tile, and a roof is obtained which is cheap, durable, and
perfectly tight, and by saturating the mortar used to fill the joints with coal-tar it remains soft and plastic for a long time, and the roof is free to expand and contract without getting leaky.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The within-described process of producing
