TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. H. MILLER, of Brandenburg, in the county of Meade, and'Statc ofKentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvemcntin the Manufacture of Nozzles or Spouts of Coffee-Pots, Pitchers, die.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and ergact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the, art to `make and use thel same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of co`eepots, pitchers, &c., which have their nozzles or spouts made of sheet metal, whether tin or other kind, and it consists in a novel manner of forming or making such spouts or nozzles, whereby it can be done with great quickness, convenience, and efficiency, as willsbe obvious from the following detail description thereof, reference being had to .the accompanying plate of'v drawings, in whichy i I Figure 1 is a plan or topv view of the lower die, with the upper one or the follower detached therefrom.
Figure 2, a side elevation of the lower and upper dies, with the former in partial longitudinal section; and
Figure 3, an end view. I v d i Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the lower die, which at one end,'-B, upon its upper surface, is out or gouged out, corresponding in shape to that which the spout or nozzle is to have, as plainly. shown in the drawings. Gr, the upper die or follower or plunger, corresponding in shape/to the cut out portion of the lower die, which follower, B, is secured to the under side of a lever-arm, C, having handle D, and hung to the upper side of the lower die by means of a hinge, H, and in such a position thereon that when swung down or toward the lower die A, the follower B, secured to it, will enter and ll, or nearly so, the cut out portion of the lower die, as plainly shown in iig. 3, so that if a. plate of i sheet metal of the desired kind be first laid upon the lower die, over its cut out portion, and in proper position, and there secured by inserting its inner end under the springcatch E, attached to such die, by then bringing the follower down upon the-same, said plate of sheet metalrwill be thereby pressed down and into the said cnt out portion of the lower die and made to conform thereto or partake of the same shape therewith, as is ,obvious without .any further description; thus forming a. nozzle or spout of 'the same, and of thedesired shape,l which, by raising the follower, canLbe removed from the lower` die. In lieu of the spring-catch E, for holding the sheet metal, other forms of holding devices may be employed, but it is necessary that some means should be provided to hold the metal, or otherwise the follower could not act to so much advantage upon'it. And it may be here remarked, in conclusion, that the follower may be attached to its lever or holder C, so as to be susceptible of detachment therefrom, and thus -allow others -of various sizes,
shapes, &c., to be used on the same holder, it being only necessary thatin such Acases the lower die should be suitably formed to admit of being similarly adjusted to the style and size, Sto., of the follower;
I claim' as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent Y l The combination of the die A, and follower Gr, secured to a holder or lever Cfhinged to the die A, and spring-catch E, or its equivalent, when arranged together, and operating substantially in the manner described. The above specification of my invention signed by me this v day of 1866.
' W. H. MILLER.
