yIllrPROVla"MENT IN BAG-TIES. .t
@It tlgetule referat it it time tcttcts zrtmtmih mating gni nf tige time.
Be it known that I, LEVI MoREI-IoUSE, ofY Barton, in the county of Washington, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a. new and improved Apparatus for Tying or Fastening Grain or other Bags; and I do hereby declare that the following:r is a full,` clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the apparatus partly open, andall its parts in place; and
Figure 2 is a plane vertical'view of the same parlyiclosed, as when applied to the bag.
C is a plane view of the slotted or. crotched arm or limb of the apparatus, showing the slot or crotch at d, and the ratchet-stop at t. e is a view of the ratchet-bar detached, andfis the ratchet-spring detached. These several parts are shown in place in fig. 1. K is a simple tag-link for lStringing or hanging up the apparatus.
I construct my invention as follows I make ofmetal, of suitable length, a clamp with two curved arms or limbs, as shown in figs. I and 2 of the drawings. These arms are hinged together at one end, as shown at g. One of these arms (the crotched one) is made broader than the other. In the outer end of this broader arm a crotch or slot is formed, as shown at d, so as toadinit the passage within it of the outer end ofthe other and narrower arm of the clamp whcnrit is to be closed upon the mouth of the bag, as hereinafter described. Near the outer end, and on the back of the upper prong oi the crotch or slot, a projection is formed, as Shown at'h. to serve as a stop to the ratchet-bar, and prevent its being thrown or forced past the crotch by the spring On the back or outer surface of the slotted or crotched arm the ratchet-bar e is loosely attached, as shown in. fig. l, so as to vibrate on its attachment or pivot: rIhis pivot is simply a rivet or screw near the end of the shank of the ratchet-bar, by which the bar is secured to the slotted arm at a suitable point back of the slot or crotch, as shown in fig. I. Under the shank of the ratchet-bar the curved spring f is also attached firmly to the crotched arm, as shown in fig. 1, in such a manner as to bear upon or against the shank between its pivot and the ratchet proper, and hold the ratchet with vthe requisite firmness against the stop h, and over the crotch d.
To operate my invention, the mouth of the bag is loosely gathered by the hand, when the clamp is passed over or around it, and the one arm forced into the crank and over the ratchet of the other, until the clamp is closed tightly around the mouth orneck of the bag, in which position it will be kept and held irrnly by the action of ratchet e and spring To relieve the fastening, the ratchet is to be simplypressed downward until the smaller arm escapes the ratchet notches, when the clamp is withdrawn.
What 'I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A clamp ,with curved arms, one of them slotted or crotched, and supplied with ratchet-bar and spring, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
. LEVI MOREHOUSE.
