Letters Patent No. 63,718, dated April 9, 1867.

I'O ALL WHOINI IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, C. GULLMANN, of Poughkeepsie, in thecounty of Dutchess, 'and Stateof' New York, have invented a. new and improved Carpet-Fastener; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of this invention. I
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section of the'sanre.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a carpet-fastener, which is composed of two rods, the lower one of which is made rough, or provided with teeth, to biteinto and retain the carpet in position. The upper rod serves to cover up or protect the lower or detaning rod, and both' rods are pressed down upon the carpet by screws or other suitable means. If desired, the detaining rod may be bent round the edge of the carpet; or, it may be turned upside down', and the carpet secured between the two rods. The ends of the upper or protecting rods are cutoft1 at suitable angles, say forty-tive degrees, (more or less,) so that the same, when .put together, will hold each other in position; and, furthermore, the rods can be readily tted together in the corners.
A represents the upper or protecting rod, and B the lower or detaining rod. The protecting rod iseither struck up or otherwise produced of sheet metal; or, it may be made of any other suitable material; and it will be readily understood that said protecting rods'ean be made plain or ornamental, to suit taste and convenience. Said protecting rod is concave or hollowed out on its under surface, and it fits over the detaining rod B, which is made by preference of sheet metal, but which may be made of any other suitable material. This detaining rod is provided with a rough surface, a, the roughness being produced by punching holes through the rod, and forming burs similar to those of a'nutmeg graterfand it is made in the form shown in the drawing, or in any other suitable form or shape. It lits into the lower concave surface of the protecting rod'iA, and its rough surface bears on the carpet, so that when the two rods are depressed by screws 6, or by any other suitable means, the carpet will be firmly retained in position. It' desired, the detaining rod inay be so arranged. 'that it will allow of passing the carpet through between the two rods; or, the detaining rod may be bent round the edge of the carpet; but in practice I prefer the arrangement shown in the drawing. The protecting rods have their ends cut of in oblique directions, at angles of forty-tive degrees, or at any 4suitable angle, so that, if said rods are placed together, they will assist in retaining each other in position; and, furthermore, the operation of tting said rods together in the corners of the room is rendered easy, and can be effected without loss of time.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,.is y
' The combination of the protecting rod'A and detaining rod B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
C. GULLMANN.
