TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS C. LITTLE, of Dixon, in the county of Lee, and State of Illinois, have invented a new. and improved Steam Generator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to the manner which water is converted into steam, and to the form of the fire-box and the interior of the generator; and the invention consists in injecting water by t force-pump against heated and steam-generating surfaces, as will be more fully explained hereafter.
Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of my generator, showing the form of the fire-box and of the steamgcnerating chamber, smoke-flue, &c. i

A represents the outer shell or casing of the generator. B is the inner shell. 13' is the steam-generating chamber. 0' is the pipe through which the water is discharged into the generating chamber and on to the steamgenerating surfaces. D is the pipe from the force-pump. E is the injection-valve box. F is the force-pump. G is the fire-box, H is the smoke-stack. J is the flue through which the products of combustion pass to the smoke-stack. K is the steam pipe, and L is a gauge-cock. N is a supporting rod. The force-pump is operated by the engine, and the valve'at E is opened at each stroke of the pump, which allows the water to pass through the pipe D into the injection pipe C. a is an arm attached to the plunger rod of the pump at one end.
I; is a crank, which is attached to the valve-rod. c is a rod which connects the arm a with the crank Z). It will be seen that by raising and loweringthe plunger of the pump, the valve will be operated or opened and closed, and as the valve and the pump act in unison, a jet of water will be thrown through the injection pipe upon the steam-generating surfaces, as seen in the drawing. It will be noticed that'the form of the surface upon which the jet of water strikes has a tendency to disperse it and to cast it in the form of spray upon the heated sides of the generator, and to fall through or into the heated air and steam contained in the generator, where it is immediately converted into steam. But, as intended, the principal duty of the hot metallic surfaces is to heat or superheat the contained air and steam to such a degree that the injected water shall be immediately converted into steam, so that but little water shall .remain in the generator while the engine is in full action. The form of the fire-box also furnishes a combustion-chamber for the consumption of the heated'gases, thereby causing a material saving in the article of fuel. i i
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The inner shell B, placed concentrically within the outer shell A, having a flue, J, between them, for the passage of the products of combustion from the fire-chamber Gr, the inner shell B, provided with a circular plate suspended from the rod N, against which the water from the injection pipe C is thrown, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The construction and arrangement of, the shells B, injecting pipe C, connecting pipe-D, fire-box- G, and circular plate suspended from the rod N, substantially asdescribed, for the purpose specified.
3. I claim the fire-box, constructed as described 4. I claim the arrangement of the arm a, the connecting rod 0, and the crank 12, by which the valve is operated, in combination with pipes D and C, for the purposes set forth.
