TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. WHITE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Window-Brush; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in theaccompanying drawings, of which-- Figure 1 is a side view and Figure 2 a vertical section of it.
This brush has a leather backing, A, for holding the masses :2 (z of bristles, they being drawn into it and secured in place by means of copper wire. 'lhe backing is circular in shape, and provided with a spindle or centre pin, 6, to extend from it through a stiffener or metallic disk, 0, and a cap-platc, I]. A nut or collar, 0, placed on the centre pin serves with it to keep the cap-plate and the backing in their proper relation with respect to each other. The backing and its bristles can he revolved relatively to the cap-plate, to which a tubular socket piece,f, is effixed. Thissocltet piece is to enable the brush to be aih'xed to a long handle, one end of which is to be inserted in the socket. Byhavi-ng the backing so applied to the cap-plate as to be capable of being revolved, as set forth, the said backing may be turned around from time to time on its centre in order to cause its bristles when in use to wear evenly. The mass of bristles oi' the common window-brush being always fixed in position relatively to the handle, is liable, by use, to become spread in opposite directions laterally from the centre, and contracted in directions at or about at right angles to the distention. This causes the brush to be worn unevenly, but when made so that the mass of bristles with their backing may be revolved on a centre pin occasionally, the wear will be caused to take place evenly throughout the mass, and the brush will operate to better advantage and last much longer. The metallic stiffening plate or disk, when applied and fixed to the leather hacking and between it and the cap-plate, serves to stiffen the backing and to stay and support it'whcn wet, and is useful in other respects. The leather backing or its equivalent is very much better than a backing of wood, which is liable to crack or become warped.
What I claim as my invention, is'
The improved window-brush, as made with the flexible backing and the inflexible cap-plate, connected by a centre pin, as and for the purpose set forth. I
I also claim the arrangement and combination of the stifi'ening platec, with the capplate and the inflexible backing and its bristles, as explained.
JOHN S. WHITE.
