TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that l, lVILLIAM G. ADAMS, of Franklin, in the county of Norfolk.,- :rnd State oi" lliassschul l l i sctts, have lnvented :tu lmproved Compound Structure of Vulcunxzed Rubber anni Fibre and l do hereby dechire tlm't the following, taken in connection with the drawings which accoinpuny und form part oi' this specification, is a description of my invention suiiicient to enable tllose skilled in the nrt to practise il.
This invention was called forth by the development of defects in the weer :rml operation of some of the ordinary Forms of rubber and rubberbelting, in my employment thereof as s conveying surface for n rice-huliiug mill, such forms resisting but very imperfectly the abrasion to which they were subjeec l. Where woven fibrous material has hcetofore been used with rubber vto give strength to the. structure, the fibres boih of worp 'find wefthave been so disposed as to be nearly parallel to the wearing sul-thee of the rubber, and in this condition they weer rapidly, While onl)7 those fibres which` are disposed in the direction o' :my tensile strain on the con:- 4pound structure are eiective in resisting such strain. As in rubber belting the .tensile s'rain is exerted in the direction of its length, the warp threads of the woven fabric therein are the only ones on which substantially the strength of the structure depends; therefore in my improved structure, 1 retain the warp threads in the direction in which tensile strength is to be exerted thereon, and substantiallyY parallel with this wearing surface, but have thetibres ot' the weft substantially at right angles to said surface, and passing through or in the struct-Lire i'n the direction of its thickness instead of across it in the usual wey. It will new be understood that nil; invention consists in a compound structure of vulcanized rubber and fibre, in which a portion of the iibrc is disposed yparallel to the wearing surface of the rubber, and in the direction to aid in resisting tensile strains, \\'hile"the other portion of' the {ibresris disposed substantially at right angles to said surfsee,` so as to present nt leastin part the ends of fibres to weer instead of presenting onl)7 the sides of them.
' I msk'e rny improved structure as follows: For a base of operations I prefer to use a metallic cylinder, which I cover with u thin sheet of rubber or rubber compound in condition to be vulcanized by application of' heut, which condition is too well known to need description here. It' itis desired to have onesuri'uce of the structure cloth-covered, then u layer of cloth must be irst applied to the cylinder before winding the sheet of rubber thereon. .f then take tape or other narrow-ware goods of width sufficient, in addition to the thickness of the material already on the cylinder, to ineke up the thickness of the structure required, und wind this tape, and a strip of rubbr of equal width therewith and in the condition before named, edgewise on the rubber upon the cylinder, continuing the winding till the requisite Width is obtained. It is obvious thht between an)f two adjacent parts of the tape there will be e strip of rubber. To obtain narrow strips of' textile goods, clotiu'such as duck, may be stripped in the direetionot' its warp to desirable widths. New, by suitable application of heut Ato the cylinder covered as described, the said covering, or the rubber part thereof, will be vulcanized, and the fibres therein willlhave the disposition substantial-ly as specified, and the structure will resist abrasive Wear better than any other of equal tensile strength with which I am acquainted. The drawings show two sections of my improved structure, the parts in blue representing'the rubber, the 'parts in real the weft threads or fibres, and the parts in black the werp threads or fibres'.
I ciaim a compound structure of vulcanized rubber and fibre, in which the disposition of fibre is substantially that specied. 4
