Description

y' @uiten trttr-ttttnt ffice,
AMBRo'sE TOWER, or 4NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 65,617, dated June 11, 1867.
IMPROVED CAP FOR UPHOLSTERER'S SPRINGS.
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, the undersigned AMBROSE TOWER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Caps for Upholstery Springs; and I do hereby declare that the 'following is a full, clear, and exact `description* ofthe construction and operation of the same, referencebeing :had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference 'marked thereon.
vThe object of my invention is to provide a cap for upholstery springs that shall be cheaper in construction and more convenient and durable in use than any similar device heretofore known or used. To this Vend I construct a cap of cast iron, brass, or composition, castin suitable mould or in sand, or I construct it` (which is preferable) of sheet iron, brass, tin, zinc, or other malleable metals by stamping or pressing the same withl suitable stamsp, dies, and presses. v i
Figure 2 of the drawings isa representa-tion of the upper side of my cap. It is constructed in a circular lllorm, and has four long aru'ls or supports marked A, and four shorter arms marked B, with eyes in the en ds thereof', so arranged as to beeasily coupled withother caps, and with the sides of the frame, by couplings C. The arms B also extend inward as shown ou the drawings, to afford additional supports to the mattress or other article oi' upholstery placed thereon. These arms may be madeof any size the case may req-nire, or the cap may be widened, if desirable, so 'as 'to furnish the support required. I usually fasten these caps to the sides of the frame by a staple hook and coupling, as shown at D on the drawings. It is sometimes preferable to use a coupling of India rubber for this purpose, and for some purposes no'attachment to the frame will be required.
Figure 1 shows my method of adjusting the cap to the spring. The lower side of my cap is constructed with a groove that extends around the entire circle thereof. The upper end of the spiral spring is placed in said groove, and, by turning either the spring or the cap halt' around, is made secure under the eyes G. These eyes G are usually` two in number, and are placed directly opposite each other below the groove above mentioned. By this device the spring is readily and securely attached to the cap, and may be detached therefrom with great ease whenever it is desirable so to do.
The advantages of my invention consist 'in securing combined action and uniformity in the movements of 'the springs by coupling them all together; lin the ease with which the cap is attached to and detached from the springs; in the strength and permanency of said attachment; in the supports furnished the upholstery by the arms A and B; and in the small expense of manufacture.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
VA grooved metallic cap for upholstery springs having arms A and B, eyes G, and attachments D, constructed I AMBROSE TOWER.
and arranged substantiaily `as herein specified Witnesses:
