Description

PATENT Ormea.
W. A. LYON, OF DANBURY, OONEGTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN FELTINVG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 66,603, dated July 9, 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. A. LYON, of Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sizing or Feltin g Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompany in g drawings, makin gpart of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like Vparts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
My invention consists in making a new and improved feltingmachine for fur hats or other similar articles.
Figure l represents a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 2 represents an end view.
In making machines for l'elting hats it has been customary, where reciprocating beds or rubbers were used, to have a pump or other device arranged to pour upon them, or on the material being operated upon, a stream of hot water or steam. Such construction of the machines rendered them expensive and cumbersome and liable to get out of order. In addition to this it is found to be difficult, if not impossible, to insure a uniform wetting ot' all the material where the hot water or steam is delivered by such means.
To remedy these objections and at'the same time provide a simple, cheap, and efficient machine, is the object of my present invention.
To accomplish these objects I construct an oblong frame, A, of any required size, having a water-tight box or vat, O, in its lower portion, as represented in Fig. 1. Within this vat I place two reciprocating beds or rubbers, a and b, the former being mounted on grooved rollers c, resting and moving on a track, c. secured in the vat, as represented in Fig. 1.v The other bed, b, is placed directly over a, and has Secured to its upper side a rod, ct', near each end, and over these a longer rod, c', these rods being so arranged as to leave a space between them, in which grooved rollers j', attached to a metal frame, B, are located, as shown in Fig. 1.
The metal frame B consists of vertical bars or rods having transverse bars g at the bottom, to the ends of which the axles for the rollers f are connected, braces h serving to render the whole frame rigid to form a support for the rubber or bed b. This frame B is arranged to move vertically, but not laterally, and is suspended by a cord, C', passing over a pulley, t', at the top of the frame A, and down over another at the end, where it is connected to a lever, E, by which the frame B, and with it the bed b, may be adjusted vertically, as desired.
A rock-shaft, I), is located transversely of the machine, just above the vat, and has attached rigidly to it a rod or lever, F, to the extremities of which is pivoted a. pitman, r, both above and below, the opposite ends of said pitmen being connected one to the upper and the other to the lower bed, as represented in Fig. 1.
At right angles to the lever F an arm, p, is attached to the rock-shaft I), and this arm p is connected by a rod,m, toa crank, n, on a shaft, l, at the top ot' the frame, by'which means a reciprocating motion is imparted to the beds a and b.
It will be understood that the machine` is made double-that is, that two sets of beds a and b are placed in one vat, and both sets are operated by the same shaft, P, the other half being a duplicate of that shown in the drawings.
The operation is as follows: The hats are rolled up and wound separately in cloths in the usual manner and then placed between the beds a and b. The vat is then filled with hot water andthe machine set in motion. The hats are thus rolled to and fro between the reciprocating beds, and the felting is effected in very expeditious a-nd efficient manner. By adjusting the bed b the pressure during the operation can be regulated at will, as desired.`v
vat C, and the latter suspended on the adjustable frameB, arranged to operate substantially as described.
WM. A. LYON.
In presence of FRANK DEKLYN, J. H. BAssETT.
