JAMES FAYE, vOF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 66,697, dated July 16, 1867; antedateol July 11, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT' IN IROPIILLIIIG HOOPS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERNE Be it known that I, JAMES FAYE, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Mode o f Propelling Rolling-Hoops; and I do herebli declarejthat the following is a. full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon.
My invention consists in a propeller or guide having a convenient hold for the hand of the operator; and` while it clasps securely theperimeter of the hoop, permits the same to circulate freely through it. The said guide, by holding a perfect control 'over the hoop, puts this diversion within reach of children Ato'o young to wield the bat. In the drawngs Figure lis a vertical longitudinal elevation partly in section, alportion ofonc side'of the guide being removed in order to show the arrangement of the parts.
Figure 2, a plan.
Figure 3, a plan of the guide, the hoop being removed.
Figure 4, a perspective view.
Likeletters refer to like parts.
a, the hoop; b, the guide; c, d, and e, rollers; f, astayto prevent lateral oscillation and to clasp hoop and guide together. I form the guide, fig. 3, at present, out of a strip of Wood, having .a slot to reeeivea portion of the hoop, (see figs, 1 and 4,) and retaining at the respective ends sufficient solid material for a handle and for strength. The rollers ede are mounted in the guide to lessen friction andifacilitate circulation. Roller h may be somewhat larger than d and e, because it bears the chief pressure, d and e run on the outside of the perimeter, e on the inside. An obstruction met in running, or other cause, willoocasionally force thc forward end of the guide to ily upwards, then chiefly the roller e comes into play as a roller, but serves at all times to clasp hoop and guide together. The stayfserves a similar purpose at the other end. Should the guide be found too Weak I can strengthen it by inserting a tight-fitting solid strip in the open space t', iig. 3, and securing it with brads or finishing-nails or4 otherwise, nctimpeding the rotation of the hoop. i
I do not claim any of the parts, the same being wellknown devices, but what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the hocip, of the guide b, rollers-c, d, and e, and stay-f,A or their equivalents, the whole being substantially as above described and for the purpose herein stated.
JAMES FAYE.
