ROBERT flu HOLLAND; or PHI-LADELPIIIA,l PENNSYLVANIA.
i YLetters Patent Nq.66,711, Vdated July/16, 1867.
Inrn'ovnn eminent GHAIR ANnsLnrrnn @In Srbcbnlt rcfrnh tu in time Enters ntent mit Innkiirglpnrtnf the time. l
To ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN ,I
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. HOLLAND, of" Philadelphia, Pennylvanin hove invented a Combined Railway Chair-and Sleeper; and I do hereby declare the following to be'afu-ll, clear, and Vexact description ofthe same.4 v .Q p
My invention consists of n cast-.iron ginder or beam, iconstruct ed hsv and comb'iued'with4 the appliances fully described hereafter, so that itl may serve as a substantial' sleeper, as wenns-chairs, to which the rails may be readily secured, and from. which they'may be as readily detached. I l 4 l* l .In order to ,enable others skilled in the art to make and apply my. invention, will now proceed to' describe its construction and opcratiomrefcrencc bein-g' had tothe accompnnyingdrawing, which forms apart of this specification,v and in whichl -i Y Y I Figure'l .is a side view of mycombined chair and railway sleeper.A`
Figure 2 is e. plan view; and Figure 3, a'section on the line 1 2, iig'. 1. t l A is n, cast-iron 'beam or girder, which isopcn at the bottom, closed ht the ends, und has on each side an i inclination'tcrminating in a central ri'b,'a, as shown" in tig. 3. A t each si'd'ecf the ginder A,'near the loweredge,A of the'same, is a ange; c, which is strengthened by fillets e e, and in the rib a, near each end of thegirdcr, is a recess, z,- one end of which is formed to receive theside of n rail, X, which'lrests at-rightangles tc the girder. on a plate, z, secured at the bottom of" the recess z, in which iitsa metal block, B; and on one end ofthe latter are projections m'and n, the former fitting against the rail X, and the latter underlapping the bottom'nange of the rail and plate z', and embracingthe rib a of the girder. T o each side of a projection, at the rear end of the block B, is jointed one end of a link, C, and through 'the rib of the girder, and through a slot in the inner end of each link C, passes a pin, s.' In cach link C is a slot, which when the link is in the position shown in g, 2, corresponds with a slot in the rib a, aud through these slots passes a key, u, the central portionof which is I equal in width to the height of the slots, While the ends are of such a Width that when the plate isrturned on its edge, as shown onthe right in iig; 1, it cannot be Withdrawn from its position. As long as the block B is I depressed inthe recess :v and bears against thcside of the rail, the latter is eiectually prevented fromrising,
while the upward movementof the block, as well as any lateral movement of t-he same, is prevent-edby the pros jections n n and the plate Should it he necessary to remove the rail, the key u is turned on its sideand withdrawnfrcm the slots Z t, thc outer ends of the links C4 nre raised until the blocks B are drawn backto the position shown on the right of fig. 1,-when the rail may be detached from the sleeper. n The material of which rthe sleeper is formed lrenders it stronghnd durable,- und owing to its peculiar shape, such an extended bearing surface is obtained' that theV sleeper, when embedded to but a slightextent in the earth, cannot'be displaced from 'its position; at the same time it forms, in combination with the appliances described, a .most efficient chair. Although the plate or'keyfu affords additional security, it may be dispensed with.
Without confining myself` to the precise .construction and arrangement of parts herein described, l claim l ns my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent* 1. Asleepcr consisting of n cust-iron beamV or girder, to which are connected the above-described devices or their equivalents, for securing the rails to the top` of the girder and permitting their withdrawal therefrom.
2. The girder A, with Vits recesses z, in combination with the blocks B and linli C, the whole being con- Itructed and arranged substantially as described, forthe purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specication in the presence cftwo subscribing witnesses.
