IMPROVED MEANS FOR GASTING ANCHOR.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;

Be it known that I, JOHN EVANS, Jr., of Milbridge, in the county of Washington, and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved Mode of Casting an Anchor from a vessels bow; and I 'do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. p

The nature of my invention consists in providing an apparatus to cast both ends of an anchor oil from a vessels prow instantly and at the same time, which apparatus consists in a lever, one end. of which is attached to a square pivot, on the end of which pivot is attached a double lever, and an iron sliding-rod, attached to each end of this double lever, working through eye-bolts in the waist of the vessel. The cat and shank stopper ismade either of rope or chain, with a ring on one end, which is placed between two eye-bolts, through which the sliding-bolts pass and secure the anchor in its proper position.

, To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A represents a section of a vessels prow; 6 represents the cat-head; O, the vessel's rail; cl, the anchor; e, a hinged shoe, which is hung by the rail C, with a strong bolt through it, and the end of said bolt plays in iron gudgeons fastened firmly to the rail C. This shoe e works for two purposes, both in taking the anchors flue upon the rail and casting itfrom the rail when required, as the shank rests upon the outboard end of the shoe, so that when the slide-bolts g g are drawn out of the eye-bolts h h, by lifting upon the lever 2' both the shank and cat-stoppers are let loose and the anchor is at once cast from the prow. J J represents the cat and shank stopper, with rings on the end, to be placed between the eye-bolts'h 7L. K represents the double lever attached to the sliding-rods g g. Zrepresents a hole through the lever 2' to admit an iron pin to secure and hold it fast when not in use. 'm'm represent eye-bolts through which the sliding-rods g 9 work.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The hinged shoe and the eye-bolts in position with the ringedcat and shank-stopper and the sliding-rods or bolts 9 g, the pin and hole Zin lever z, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
