Be it known that I, PETER CHANDLER, of Olney, in the county ofRich'land, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Fences; and Ldo hereby declare the following to be a full,lclear,

and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, whichlare made part of this specication. i

'lhis invention consists in attaching the di`erent panels of a `portable fence to their respective posts by keys or libs so constructed as vto brace the fence both laterally and longitudinally. In the drawings` Figure-1 isa perspective view ofc. fence embodying my improvement, l i

Figure 2 isa. similar view of one of the keys or gibs. y Y p A A1 A2 represent the posts of a eld-fence, supported onsills, and strengthened by lateral braces in the usual way; B Bl B?, Vthe panels, and C the keys or gibs by which the postsV and panels are connected, the post-s being provided at proper heights with slots a, corresponding with the ends ofthe key C and the panels, with double battens b at each end for the keyto pass through and between. The key C is constructed, as'shown in fig. 2, with a shank, c, and lips c'. The shank ois made round, l(or nearly so,) so as to turn easily in the slot, and in length lto correspond with the thickness of a post and two battens for the straight fence, (as shown at A,) and a post andonc hatten at the corners, (as shown at A,) the post A being slotted on all its sides to permit the attachment of the panel B at right angles with the others. The lips c. may be made o f any desirable form, so that their inner faces are at right angles (or nearlyso) with the shank c. I

The panels being set on the sills in .connection with th-e posts, the keys are introduced between the batten's and through the vslots in the posts, and turned so as to bring their lips at about right angles withv the slots, and against the edge of one of thebattens b, or theside of the post, when the attachment is complete.

By constructing a fence in this way one-of the-panels maybe readily removed for repainor be used as a gate, Without impairing in the least the rest of thestructure. i

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the keys or gibs C (constructed as described) `with the slotted posts A A, and double 4hattened panels B B1, of a portable fence, as and for the purpose described.
