IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FLOOD-FENCE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY conceals;

Be it known that I, JOHN B. Srozinn, ofthe town of Lacon, in the county of Marshall, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful improvement in Portable Flood-Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an end view,

Figure 3 the device of a post, with square journal-box cut therein.

a a represent posts fixed in the ground, with square tops, having thereon, securely fixed by means of screws or spikes, the square cast journal-boxes b b, in which rest the ends of the bottom cross-rail 0, made round. dd represent solid triangular-shaped blocks, attached to the upright sections and cross-rails of the fence, and resting on pins or posts driven in the ground at e e. f represents the device of a square journal-rest, made in the top of the post, with cap affixed.

The object of the improvement is to afl'ord a cheap and durable portable flood-fence for sections of country liable to overflow, which can be removed at the option-of any person, by means of-taking ofi' the slides'or caps of the'i boxes on the posts, and which adapts itself to the pressure of'the water by turning upon its bearings.

The object in having the journal-box made in the form o-f a hollow square, as shown in b b andf, and the ends of the bottom rail resting thereon made round, is that by these opposites of construction the dampness, which'naturally accumulates in the points of bearing, is absorbed bythe action of the atmosphere. circulating I freely in'the interstices between the rest and the journal, and hence the decay of the wood isretarded at that point, and the durability of the fence materially efi'ected.

The body of the fence inclines in the direction of the triangular blocks d d, which are made solid for the purpose of increasing the weight of the fence in that direction and giving no obstruction to the passage of drift, which might be occasioned by those otherwise constructed. The inclination of the fence is'obtained by making these blocks; obtuse in the angle touching the pins upon which they rest.
