BENJAMIN KNAPP, OF BLOGMVILLE, OHIO.
I Letters Patent No. 69,104, dated September 24, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAST-IRON KNEE FOR SLEIGHS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN KNAPP, of Bloomville, in the county of Seneca, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improvement in Sleds and Sleigh's; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial section, and
Figure 2 an end view and partial cross-scct-ion, showing my improvement.
The nature of my invention consists in the use of a wrought or cast metallic knee or brace, firmly secured by bolts or clips between the runners and the frame which supports the body of a sleigh or forms-the top of a. sled, in such a manner as to enable the builder to dispense with all mortises and tenons, and to put his work together in the most expeditious, durable, and economical manner, and to make repairs with the greatest facility and dispatch. I
In the drawings, A A are the rails, forming part of or supporting the top or body of a sled or sleigh. 13 B are the braces or cross-ties connecting the runners C O with each other and with the top rails A, as will be set forth. D D are metal knees or braces, the upper surfaces of which are fiat, and rest against the under sides of the cross-t ies B. The lower ends of the knees may be notched or rounded out to suit the shape of the top edge of the runner on which they will stand, so as to be kept from twisting, as shown in fig. 2. Bolts E E pass up through the runner along grooves in each side of the knee D, and of the cross-tie B, through the rail A, where they will be secured by washers and nuts or their equivalents. The heads of the bolts may be sunk in recesses made'for the purpose in the bottoms of the runners. Instead of bolts, it maybe expedient at times to use clips, or a single bolt bent into the form of a clip, as shown at E in section, fig. 1, passing like the bolts through holes in the runners, and secured at top in the same manner, a groove, a, being made in the bottom of the runner, to receive the looped or closed end of the clip, as shown in fig. 2.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I. claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The knee or brace D, of cast or wrought metal, secured to andcombined witlrthe frame and runner of a sled or sleigh, by meansof clips or bolts fitting ingrooves along each side of the knee, substantially as set forth.
The above specification signed by me this 4th day of February, 1867.
BENJAMIN KNAPP. Witnesses:
HENRY CUMUELL, GEO. S. YUIGLING.
