'ro ALL'wuou rr MAY cone-nun; l l l Beitknowu thatV I, MAL-'RICE JOYCE, of the 'city und county ot` Washington, in the Dist-riet of Columbia,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vlloisting, Lowering, and Beta-ching Boats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, angl exact description of' thc saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the lettersof `reference marked thereon. l
'llie nature of my invention consists in :constructing an apparatus, to be hereafter described, for raising, lowering, and detuching:r boats, suspended from or hungr to a vessel; i
To enable those skilled in 'the art 'to make and use my invention, I )vill proceed to describe its construction and operation. i v t A Lil-:e letters reprcsent'lillie parts in the several figures. 4
In the drawings, X represents a part section of a vessel, ll the davits, properly secured to the same either outside or inside. Tothese are. secured such .blocks and tackles C f1 as may he desired, one or more. These engageuith framesb, which support a shaft or rod, r', carrying at each end` a spool or windluss, d, around which the rope o winds or unwiuds. Eaehol the t'raines bhas two lower projections c, which also support a rod,f, running;r parallel-tofttilhelow f'. These ears er projections e also support bifurcated arms D, which are pivoted belowf to said projections e. E is thesuspended heat, havingiat each -end a rope attached, with a hookor loop, y, at its outer end, intended to take into theforked recesses i in vibrating` arms D. F represents the heat dtaeheih'm'in the water Betweeuihe .pullezslasprrolszl is. frameimidi,.G,emisisting of two 1 plates-,- and through which pass the shafts c a'ndf, which rotate. To -the upper shaft @which carries the windlasses d, is secured a worm-whecl, ll, irs also a brake, or friction-wheel, l. 'The former, ll, engages with a worin, z', capa. ble ol' being revolved, hav`ing a handle, J, and it being secured at top and hottoin, as seen, in traine so that the worm'i can bc turned easily hy hand. ',lhe lower end rif/worm i passes through :t picco, K, slotted, and having a, spring and n recess, k, and can he pushed iu or ont at pleasure, seen in Figure 2. luv turning a lever, 7, attached to .a cani or eccentric, nz, which engages with the slot Zr at phiasuro, I can lsecure or disengage the worm when desirable. Connected with friction-wheel I is a hralle, m, operated in any ordinary manner. In this case, by pulling a. rope, L, zlever, n, pivotedto traine (i, tight-ens the hand or brake. Jn surrounding I, and the revolutionsl of wheel Il, or tliespeed of lowering the boat, can he 'regulated h" pulling on rope L. (')pposite `the oamdever on the other side ol' the frame tr, there is a lever, n, attached to roeloshnl'tf, l'or the purpose of turning it-when desired, that is, detachingthc boat by the saine being suddenly lifted hy a wave while lowerintar it.
The Operation is as follows: Supposing theboat tovhc iu its raised or normal position, as shown by E, one person can lowerand detach it, as also attach and raise itfas follows: Say the occupant nl' the boat siinpljv turns crank J, which turns the worin-t', and it turns the wheel ll and shaft e, and the rope is unwound, and the boat is lowered. It it be necessary to -lowcr more rapidly, 'turn the lever .7, discnguging its cani l'roln recess r of piece K, when this latter can he pulled outward, and the worin z' he disengaged fromworan-wheel ll, as seen in red outlines, fig. '2. Before this is done, the rope l) niust be seized, andthe friction-brake nfbo pressed, hy means of lever 11, upon t`rietion-wheel 5I. The holder of Athe rope can thus let himself' down as fast or slow as he pleases. Previously he must remove pin or pins rij, and when near'the water, hy turning era-nk f, which revolves shaftf, its recesses l) are brought into a certain position as to the arni D, which will rotate and take the position as Shown by red lines in Figure 3, droppingl the hooks 1,' Iand thc boat. A reverse operation will hoist the boat., one man being sufficient. l
One or more blocks may be used; the davits muy he inside thc vessel, it' desired, andthe boat can he easily put inside tbevessel also,l these not beingr points ot` invention, but of suitability. Near G, on shaftf, I have a projection to prevent its turning teo much, byvcoining inte Contact with lower point ot` frame G, and I` have attached to shaftj'a. spring near said frame, which presses against-lever o, and by means ol' which f is revolved, and hook G discharged from recess h, when near or about touchingl the water. To this end also there are recesses p in shat'tf, one at each end; and when this is turned into a certain position in regard to slet the boat can be readily detached, that is', the bifureated arms l), cairvingr rock-shaftjf. when released from pins or other det-ents, will turn downward, as seen in red lines, iig. 3, and empty thc hooks or eyes g, detaching the boat.
Figure 4 shows a modification of the central works in frame G, a mere mechanical equivalent, having, beside the wormsivheel H, a. toothed wheel, r, attached like-H to shaft c, and engaging with it is 'the small toothed wneel 9 on 'the shaft s, with n. friction-pulley or brake-wheel, t, on the same shaft s, to be operated like 1', or cquivjiiently.
.When the boat is hoisted up, or about to be so, the hooks or eyes i', being placed in the recesses l1. oi' :irnbl D, they rire heidt-here more securely by means of pins y passing through the ears or prf'ijeetions e of freine b,
at one or both ends,'nnd there muy be :riso a. spring 0r sui-table fietent, to keep g from being dezarchcii from sniii recess in arm D. v
Having thus described my invention, what I ehiiin as' new and useful., und desire te see-.rre by Letters Patent oi' the United States, is-
1.. The eornbinutiou of frames b,- spoois or windiasses d, shaft o, frame G, wheels ii und I, or lnheir equivaiens, umiworrn i, arranged, constructed, und operating in the manner subfruniuiiy es shown and described, :rnd for the purpose set forth.
2. The ciimbinzr'rion of' brake n, wheels E and H, Shaft c, worm 17, and eem-lever Y, arrange/i, constructed, and operating in the manner substantially va-s shown and described, and for the purpose set for-tb.
The combination of frames b, lhaving be ears e L", with shaftfnnd binrcated arms D D, arranged, eenstructed, and operating in the manner substantially usshown mrd described, and fer the purpose set forth.
