Letters Patent No. 69,292, dated iS'qitemlw/r 24, 186T.
IMPROVEMENT IN UALIPERS AND DIVIDERS.
fllllge Stigmata reform in in flpst itr'ttcts emu ant uniting part at the 5mm.
KNOW ALL MEN BY TH ESE PRESENTS:
That I, EDWARD WRIGHT, of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calipers and Dividers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved calipers, and
Figure 2 represents an edge view.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings A A are the arms of the calipers hinged together at the top, as seen at a. B is a steel spring, the ends of which are turned up to form eyes, through which pins 6 b are passed'to fasten the ends of said spring to the upper ends of the arms A A as fully indicated in the drawings. The ends of spring B are recessed or cut out in the centre to enable the spring to fit the arms A A properly, as indicated at c, 2, so that pins 6 I) pass through the eyes in the ends of the spring B, and also through the arms A A, thereby uniting the parts in a very secure and compact manner. 0 C are eyes, the ends of which pass through the arms A A, and are provided with washers d before the ends are headed down. The eyes G C can turn freely in the arms A A. They have holes through which the thumb-screw D ispasSed, and 'the eye C has a screw-thread cut therein to receive the thumb-screw D, by means of which the ends 0 e of the arms A A can be adjusted at any desired distance apart. The hole in the eye C is made large enough to allow the thumb-screwD to pass freely through it. The eyes C C being swivelled, adjust themselves to the thumb-screw D as the arms A A are opened or closed, so that there is no binding of the parts.
By my improvements calipers can be. made equally as good as those in which the spring B and arms A A are all made in one piece, while they cost much less. Again, if the spring B break in my improved calipers, it can be replaced, while in case the spring breaks in those in which the arms and springs are all in one piece, the arms are useless. e i
My invention is applicable to dividers the arms or legs of which are usually made straight.
Having described my improved calipers, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. The combination, with the arms or legs of a pair of calipers or dividers, of the spring B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. 7
2. The combination, with the arms or legs of a pair ofcalipers or dividers, of the swivelled eyes 0 C,
thumb-screw D, and spring B, substantially as and forthe purposes set forth.
' EDWARD WRIGHT.
