IMPROVEMENT Ill GAS-GENERATOR.
dbitlzehule nitriet in in fliet-Eaters atntt mit uiting am tf its time. l
Be it known that I, MATTHEW FLOON, of the town of Bloomington, in the county of McLean, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved Gas-Generator and syringe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fallend exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.
The nature oimy invention consists in the combination of a gas-generatorand syringe of peculiar and novel construction, for the purpose of applying remedial agents to diierent parte of the human body which have hitherto been impossible to reach by means ordinarily employed.
`My invention is peculiarly adapted to the treatment of diseases of the womb, to which remedial agents can be applied directly to the part a'ected, whether in the interior or exterior of that organ, and immediate relief' obtained, which, without the aid or employment of my invention, could not be so eeetually reached.
To enable others skilled in the ais-ft to make andluse my invention, I will proceed todescribe its construction and' operation.
Figure I is a side elevation of the dexible syringe, showiughow the different nozzles may be applied.
Figure II is a side elevation of the guage'nei-atar.l Y
Figures III and IV represent nozzles of dierent forms employed for different purposes, they being attached to the syringe. i
Letters of liko name and kind indicate like parts iu each of the tigures.
A represents a ilexible bag or'eack, that may be made of rubber, or any other suitable material, provided with a mouth-piece, upon which is a screw-thread, for the purpose of attaching diercnt forms of nozzles, adapted for the treatment 'of diierent diseases located in diicrent parts oi' the body, and for the use and application ci',
different remedial agents. B represents a gasgenerator, made of hard rubber, or other suitable material, coustructed cylindrical in form, as shown in Fig. II. The fountain C is madeof hard rubber, or soft flexible rubber, or other suitable material, and is connected or applied to the generator B by tube d. Said tube is provided with a stop-cock, c, so as to cut oii communication between the water-fountain e and gasggencrator B, or may be used without stop-cock if with flexible rubber. D represents a nozzle, employed for introducing remedies to the mouth of' the womb and exterior of that organ. F rcpresenis anozzle for the purpose of injecting the necessary remedies into the neck of the womb, which pass readily in the interior of thatporgan also may bel npplied to other organs of the body inlike manner. It will be observed that any form of nozzle may be attached to the syringe by means of the screw-thread. p u
Any ei'ervescing compound, as supercarbonate of soda two parts, and tartaric acid one part, may bc used for the purpose of producing gas, when water is introduced from thereservoir C, and the medicinal agent,.if in asolid form, may be mixed with the soda and acid, or, if in a liquid form, it should be mixed with the water in the reservoir. In this Way nitrate of silver, belladona, morphine, &c.',' may be introduced into'the cavities of ,the body in a form which will insure their contact with every portion of the interior surface, and wi'th an effect superior to any mode of application hitherto in use. l
The operation ot' this instrument is simple. The proper medicinal agent is placed in` the generator, and the `sack A, rolled together so as to expel the air, is then attached by screwing its neck into the top of the generator, and the cock F opened. The fountainC having been llcd with water the cock c isopened, and thc-water permitted to iiow into the generator, and the cock e is then closed again to prevent the passage of gas into the fountain or reservoir C. YThe contact of water with the'vmedicinal agent employed causes a chemical transformation, by which the desired medicated gasis liberated, and, rising,'lls the sack A, which, when containing the desired quantity, is shut oli` by turning the cock'F, and it may ,then -bo removed from the generator. The proper nozzleis attached tothe neck of the sack A, and by introducing the same into the cavity of the body, where the medicinal gas is to be applied, the gas is expelled by pressure upon the sack. In this way medicated gas may be produced and conveyed to any distance for use.
Having thus described my invention, what I `claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is I A The combination of the fountain G, connected to the generator B by means of the tube-d, with the sack A provided for different forms of nozzles, subistantially as herein shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
MATTHEW FALCON.
