T0 ALL WIOM IT MAY `OONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WHITTLE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and staple, or in any other convenient manner. D is the crank, the shaft of which In and useful improvement in Goal-Screens; and I description thereof, which will enable those skill the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a cheap and simple screen whereby coal may be separated from the 4ashes and dust contained therein in a neat and expeditious manner, and the invention consistsin constructing a cylinder-screen, and revolving the saine in a. tight box, and in constructing the box in a peculiar manner, so that the parts thereof are rendered otherwise useful, as will be hereinafter described. 4
Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section of the screen and its box through the line :v z of g. 2.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-scction through thc line y y of iig. 1.
, Similar letters of rcferenceindicate corresponding parts.
A represents the screen-box, which is formed in two parts, separated at the. middle, and hinged together by hook-hinges, which'allow the parts to be separated. Where the two parts of the box come in contact the edges arebevellcd, as seen at a, so that the parts are prevented from sliding 'when' in use. B is the cylinder-screen. It is formed 0f heads, with suitable stays uniting thein, and covered with wire cloth or wire screen of suitablesizcd apertures for the passage of the ashes, etc. A section of this cylinder is detachable to allow access to the intcriorfas seen in the cross-section. This portion is marked C. This section may be secured in its place in any `suitable manner.
In this example of my invention the section slides into position longitudinally, after the manner et a dovetail, in which position it is held bya button, seen at c, tig. 1.
arranged that when the upper portion of the box is thrown back it is readily detached from the other part, or replaced when desired. When thefbox is closed for screening, the tive parts are securedv together by a hook lay either pass through the cylinder or the crank-journal, and the pivot at the other end may be secured to the heads of the cylinder.
It will be seen that as the box divides in the middle',
be discharged therefrom into thc top portion of the box, vThe ashes and dust remaining in the other part of thebo do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact from which it may he used, or poured into the scuttle.
x may he disposed of by carrying them out in the box. It will thus be seen that with this screen the disagreeable operation of screening coal may be performed anywhere without raising a dust, and the coal-screenings and the ashes and dust hc disposed of without the trouble, dust, and dirt which usually attend such operations.
Having thus described my invention, I cla-im as'- ncw, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The cylinder coal-screen B and the screen-box A, when the same are constructed,`arranged, and operated substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
