TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN 2 Be it known that I, CHARLES E. LATTIN, of Birmingham, in the county of- New Haven, and State of Con# hectcut, have invented a new Improvement in Flush-Bolts for Doors, &c. and I do hereby declare the following,
when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of' reference marked thereon, to he a full, clear, and exact description of the same,V and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, ini Figure 1, a front view,
-Figiure 2 a side view, and in Figures 3 and 4 sections, on linea: zo, to illustrate the operation.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of bolts for doors, Snc., commonly called. Hush-bolts, 0r such as-have: the op'erative partsof the bolt flush with the face of the plate or case, and consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of that part by which the bolt is moved. p
To enable others to construct and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same, as'illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Y l
A is a plate, constructed so as to receive the boltI B, and, while it formsbearings C for the holt, it encloses or covers the bolt when placed upon the door, or to Whatever the bolt is applied. Centrally, or nearly so, in the plate A, I form an opening to receive a plate, D, the said plate D pivoted upon the under side of the plate A at a,as seen in iig. 2, and as denoted by broken lines, fig. 1, and so that when lying'at and at rest, as in fig. 2, the surfaces of the plate A and the plate D are i'lush and even. The said plate D is formed with arms, @Land t'nay he depressed at either side from the pivots, as seen in figs. 3 and 4, and when depressed, ras in Iig. 3, in the direction denoted by the arrow, the depressed arm d strikes upon the bolt, so that by the continued movement ofthe plate D the bolt is thrown out, as seen in g. 3, and when in like manner depressed in theopposite direction, as seen in fig. 4, the other arm, o2, comes'in contact with the bolt, and so as to draw` it in, as seen in iig. 4. A spring, E, bears upon the plate D, so that when free-and at rest the plate D lies flat :and iiusb, and yet so that it may be easily depressed in either direction, as occasion may require.
Having Atherefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, lis t The combination of the plated) in the plate A and the bolt B, constructed and arranged so as to operate substantially as herein set forth.
CHAS. 'E. LATTIN.
