SAMUEL W. SLOCUMB, 0F ALBANY, ILLINOIS. Letters Patent No. 71,801, dated December 3, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON-HUB.
@132 gflgehule numb in in tum 1mm new mm making part at fig: 88bit.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: 7
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. SLOGUMB, of Albany, in the county of Whitesides, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hubs of Wagons, lite; and I do hereby declare that the following is .a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in-which- V Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the outside of the hub, and
Figure 4 is an elevation of the inside of the hub.
The same letters in all the figures are used in the indication ofthc same parts.
My present invention relates to improvements made on my improved wagon-hub, as described in Letters Patent of the Uinited .states, gr a p t e d to me on .the gtliilayfof Junc, A. I l. 1Sfi7-, and consists in modifications of the same, to save cost of construction and thednnecessdry irlction of the parts. Tl1esc changes will be set forth in the claims herein. 1
A is a hub, which may be made of metal or other suitable material. It is in the form of a ring, having openings in theperiphery to receive the spokes. Or: the'inner face of the hub is a projection, A, to give grcatet depth to the spoke-sockets, and permittlie hub to be made smaller. 13 is theaxle, passing through the wheels 0 C, which form the spindle. These spindles are attachedto the axle on each side of the projection A, the
axle being inserted through the spindle in front of the centre. The spindles are. not round, but the part extending from 1 3 2, in fig. 3, is made upon a circle of greater'radius than that from 1 to 2, so that the bearing of the spindle shall be on one side only, at the projection D or the friction-roller E. If the projection D is used, it will be formed by a brass key inserted in a groove across the face of the spindle. The friction-cylinder, if used, will run in a recess formed to receive-it in the rim of the spindle, projecting far enough to form a bearing against the inside of the hub. F is a hole through the cap G, to enable the spindle to be lubricated. The spindles are enclosed by caps G and H placed over the ends of the hub. 3
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with the hub A, formed with an internalannular projection, A, two spindles, C C, and the axle B, when-the latter is attached to the spindle in front of their centres, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The spindles O and 0, when attached to the axle as set forth, and formed with a b'earing,'D, orfriction roller E, substantially as set forth.-
3. The spindles C and C, when their sides are constructed with curves of different radius, and they are,
arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth. p
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
S. W. SLOGUMB.
