WILLIAM H. ANDREWS, 0E NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSICNCE To BURTON MALLCRY, 0E SAME PLACE.
Letters .Patent No. 71,944, dated December 10, 1867.
@he rbehul referrer in in there Enters atent mth making putt of .tbs sam.
`TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
lBeit knownpthat I, W. II. ANDnEws, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and-Stateof` Gonnecticut, have invented a new Improvement i n Door-Locks, and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the 'accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference markedrthereon, to be a full, clear, and
`exact description of the same,4and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in'
Figure 1, a face view, V i
FigureZ a side view, a portion o'f the plate removed t'o show the improvement, and in Figure 3 'a like view, to illustrate its'operation. v l
`This invention relates more particularly to mortise-locksor latches, yet may be applied to locks or latches of other description, and consists in the peculiar arrangement and operationof the third or thumb-holt; and to the better understanding of my invention, as well 'as to enable others to construct the same, I willjproceed to a description, as illustrated in the accompanying dr'awings.
Al is the face-plate; B the latch-bolt; Crthe. lockholn-arranged and enclosed within acuse, D,so es 'toi operate in the usual manner. E is the third bolt, arranged within the case, its inner end formed intoa yoke,
d andf. F is the follower,-arranged in the oase -like thefollower of the latch-bolt, and formed with an opening,
a, into which a spindle is placed, extending through to one s ide of the door, und on to the said spindle u, knob or other contrivance is urranged,`for moving the bolt. YThe lower 'side of the follower is formed as a doubleinclned cam, z', beneath which is arranged a spring, H', so that as the follower is turned from the position in ig.2. tothat in tig. 3, or vice versa, the spring reacts to throw the follower over and hold it in either position.
The upper end, F, of the follower, acts upon either side, d orf, of the yokemls the case may be, to throw the bolt out, as in iig.` 3, or draw in the bolt, as in iig. 2. The follower is prevented from beingthrown too far out in either direction, by a. projection, s, within the case, and when the bolt hals been `thrownout, as in'figf3, the position of the follower, relatively to the bolt, is such that the bolt cannot be returned, except by the means which throwsY it out. Thus I have'arranged within the locli-case a neat and compact third bolt, which is, in itself, far more secure than any of the known mortise or flush bolts, andiis therefore applied -to the door at very little additional trouble,4 and at a very trilling additional cost in the manufacture of the lock. i i
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is l i p j The bolt E, constructed and arranged within the lock-case, in combination with the follower F, constructed with a cam, z', and spring H, so as to hold the bolt securely in both its locked 4and'unlocked position, substan tiall-y in themanner herein set forth.
WM. H. ANDREWS.
