Description

@uitrit tutes gesteht @frn CHARLES H. BERRY, OF EAST SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 71,957, dated December 10, 1867.
IMPROVBD sore-Bremen.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BERRY, of East Somerville, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Bcdsteads, of which the followingis a. full, clear, and exact descriptiom'referncc being had tothe accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in Whichv,
Figure 1 represents a front elevation ofa sofa-bedstead embodying my improvements.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the same, when opened and readyl for use as bedstead, and
Figure 3 is a transverse section of fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate like parts in the, several gures.
i The object of my invention is -to provide a sofa-bedstead, which may be readily changed from a sofa to al i bedstead, the latter being prepared for occupancy as soon as opened, without the trouble or necessity of making i up i the bed; andthe invention consistsin so constructing a sofa that therinside may be upholstered anditted y with a mattress, and that the space inside will be sufficient to contain the bed-clothes, without requiring any portion of the same to beremoved to enable the sofa to be closed. n
` Referring to the drawings, a represents the main'or stationary portion ofa sofa or lounge, and b the movable or upper portion, the latter forming the seat, whenv the article is used as a lounge. 'c represents the back, made in the usual form. d is the arm or head-piece, .hinged to` the upper or seat-portion of the lounge, so that, whenthe latter is'opened, it will turn over out of the way, as shown in iig. 2, and thus render available the entire length inside.. The front portion or panel e of the lounge is hinged to the main portion at the lower part, so that, when let downrin the position shownin g. 2, the upper or seat-portion muy beturned over, and the corresponding inner edges of the upper andvlower portions will come close together, and allow of an even surface tothe upholstered portion Within. vWhen closeda, suiicient space will rem-ain to hold all the necessary clothes 'and pillows. The upperA and lower portions may be fitted with springs, as shown in iig. 3, those of thc upper serving for the seat when closed, as well as for the 'bed when open. ff representl a head and foot-board, which may be used, if desirable, for the bedstcad, and, when not inv use, they may be placed under the lounge or hung to the rear portion of the same. The arm or head-piece d may be provided with a `spring-catch, so as tb be firmly retained' in position whcnclosed, and the panel e may also be secured in-the same way when closed.4 The front p'rtion I), when opened, may be supported by legs g g, as shown.
By this construction the bed may be made up, and all the necessary clothes be containedbetween the upper and lower portions, andthe parts be closed to form the lounge, so that, when opened to form the bedstcad, the bed will bc all ready to be occupied, without the necessity of again making the bed or bringing the mattress and yclothes from another apartment or receptacle. i
What I claim as new, and 'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the lower portion a, the seat b, and head d, and the hinged or movable'pan'el e, in a sfo or lounge, substantially as and for the purpose described. i
In testimony whereof, I have sig-ned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
oHAs. n. BERRY.
