Description

,i @nitro taten gutem @fitta HARVEY BRIGGS, OF SMITHLAND, KENTUCKY.
Letters .Patent No. 71,966, dated December 10, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN rLoueHs.
fitte rlgmlr referrer in in time @mais man tnt making met tf its same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, HARVEY'BRIGGS, of Smithland, in the county of Livingston, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ploughs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Y Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plough, parts being broken away'to show the construction.
Figure 2 is a. vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its objectto furnish an improved plough for breaking up sod-or prairie land, which shall be strong and durable in construction and eiective in operation; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts, as hereinafter more fullyd'escribed.
A is the beam, and() are the handles ofthe plough, about the construction of whichparts there is nothing new. The land-side and mould-board frame of the plough are cast in one piece, B, which is further strength- Y ened by the upper Hoor b1 and the lowe'r iioor b, also cast solid with the mould-board frame and land-side, as shown in gs. l and 2. The mould-board frame is formed. with a. grooveor recess to receive the boxingframe H ofthe rollers D. The boxing-framefH is formed in two parts, as shoivn n-g. 1, so that, should a partof the said frame or one of the rollers D become broken or worn, it may be conveniently replaced with a new one.
The rollers D are made slightly cone-shaped, and theiljournals are pivoted in sockets formed iu the inner `part of the boxing-frameH for their reception. I are Washers or packing, which are-made of square or diamonda shaped pieces of Arubber or other suitable elastic material, and ,are placed upon the journals of the rollers and Wheels to prevent the dirt and sand from finding their way in and interfering with the operation of the said rollers. p The ends of the rollers should be made a little concave for the reception of the said Washers or packing;` An
oil-trench or channel, J, to lintroduce oil to the roller-journals, should be formed in the inner part of the frame C, so that the oil may find its way to all thejournals and keep them properly lubricated. E is a friction-wheel, the bearing of whichis securely attached to the inner side of the rear end of the mould-board frame, as shown `in iig. 1. F is a friction-wheel, the bearing ofrwbich is adjustably attached to the innerside of the middle part of the land-side ofthe plough,as shown in fig. 2, so that it may be adjusted as required to regulate the pitch of the plough. The wheels E and F roll along the bottomof the furrow, receive the downward pressure ofthe plough, and greatly diminish the friction. .G is a vertical roller having a flange, g, formed around` its lower end, the bearings of which are securely attached to the rear end of the land-side of the plough, in, such a posi-V tion that the said roller may project a little beyond the said land-side, so as to receive the inward pressure of j the sod or furrow being turned, and diminish the friction, theiiange g preventing the rear/ part of the plough from rising,- andA causing the plough to run much more steadily than it otherwise would. K is the share, which is made of s.teel,'and the point of which should be on a level with the friction-wheels E and F.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Forming the land-side, mould-board frame, and upper and lower strengthening-doors b and b2 solid 4in "one'piece B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the conical rollers D and their boxingframc H with the mould-board frame B, sub stantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. `Forming the boxing-frame H in two parts, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. .Forming an oil-trench or channel, J', inthe boxing-frame H, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the'elastic washers 'or packing I with the journals and bearings of the rollers and wheels, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination of the adjustable friction-wheel F and stationary friction-wheel E with the solid landside and mould-board frame B, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the Apurpose set forth.
7. The combinationof the vertical flanged friction-roller G with the land-sidc-ol the plough, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. i
