Description

@uitrit tutes gat-wt @Hita CHARLES KIRCHHOF, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 72,506, dated Deceme 24, 1867. l
IMPROVEMENT IN CANDLE-HOLDERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES KIRc'HHoF, of Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Candle-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full-and exact description thereof, reference being had to .the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
.Thenature of my invention consists` in the constructionfof an 'arrangement for conveniently attaching candles, ornaments, or other objects to and maintaining above any oscillatingsnpport, (as the branches of a tree,) in their proper position.
I will now proceed to describe my construction and operation.
The construction of my device is based upon the principle of a double-armed pendulum. The Weight attached l to the short arm, above the support of suspension, is counterbalance'd by means of an over-weight fastened on alonger arm suspending, and commands, by its gravity, the perpendicular position of the combination.
A hook, as Shown in Figure, a b, extending towards c and d, and made' ofthe required material, may be so arranged as to be conveniently attached, either by the curved part a, or the point to the support s s, and easily removed again. The short part c, extending upwards, may be supplied with a Candlestick, e, or any other object desired, the several-times larger part, d, by meansof a ball,f, fruit, or any other object of suiicient gravity, attached to its end, being al1 that is required for the successful operation. It is obvious that the whole combination may consist of one or more pieces ofa variety of materials, if arranged according to my principle.
Having described my invention, I will now-state what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, viz:
I claim, as a new article of manufacture, the hoch a 6, in combination with rod d, ballf, and holder c, or l any equivalent, when constructed and arranged in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
` CHARLES KIRCHHOF,
