WILLIAM A. MEYER, 'OF INDIANAPOLIS INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 72,522, dated December 24, 1867'.
IMPROVED COMPOSITION FOR TEMPBRING STEEL SPRINGS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MEYER, of Indianapolis, Marion county, Indiana, have invented a. new and useful compound, called Tempering-Substance, for Tempering Steel Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,'clear, and exact description of the same.
My compound for tempering steel springs consists of the following ingredients and proportions: Prussiate of potassa, three pounds; muriate of ammonia, three pounds; refined bornx, three pounds; rosin, three pounds; crude lubricating-oil, one-half of a barrel, (sixteen gallons.)
I manufacture this compound in the following manner: I pluee the oil over the fire, put-in the abovementioned ingredients with their proportions, and dissolve them by boiling the oil. The boiling-process occupies about a half hour, .during which time I stir up the oil constantly, and after the expiration of that time the compound is ready for cooling and use. d
lhe steel to be tempered in this compound must be red hot to produce the desired effect. The tempering is done in the usual way, and tempers much better than any other manner.
What I elaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is A compound of prussiate of potassa, muriate of ammonia, borax, rosin, and crude lubricating coal-oil, mixed in proportions as before stated, for the purpose of tempering steel springs.
WILLIAM A. MEYER.
