Description

@1t-irri: gratins` getraut. @Hirn SAMUEL MARDEN, 0 F NEWT() N, MASSACHUSETTS.'
Lettere Patent Ne. 72,655, elated December 24, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-DRAWER.
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MARDEN, of Newton, in the State of Massachusetts,vha.ve invented a'new and improved Instrument for Drawing Nails and forpotherpurposes, of `which the following, with the accompanying drawings, is a full description.
Figure 1 is a. side elevation.
Figure 2 is a`vertical section of the same. l
The instrument produeedhy my invention is peculiarly adapted for drawing out nails that are without heads, and that have been lburied in the wood, while, at the same time, it is simple, cheaper, and fur more effective in circumstances permitting the use of other instruments'.
Its construction is as follows.: The part containing the jaws' and cam, and terminating in thehandle, isv made of cast or malleable iron. The handle is solid, whilst the shorter arm of the lever is vertically pierced to admit the stationary jaw a, fixed by the nutx, and the movable jaw b, hung on the pivot e, together with the cam c, suspended on the pivot n. The jaws serrated on their lower inner edge for securely holding the nail, and the cam, are made of cast steel, and the pivots of steel wiret The spring g keeps the jaws apart, and the rod y the camY in position when'not in use. The metals stated I think preferable, and, also, theta hammer combined withthe drawer would be animprovem'ent. Thejws, having been placed about the nail, and by pounding on the nut x, sufficiently inserted below it, anda downward pressure applied to the handle, the can: c acts as a Fulcrum to the lever d, and -as a lever to the movable jaw b, firmly holding the nail inthe jaws till the pressure upon the fulcrum has ceased, by the withdrawal of the nail.A I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A cam, c, acting as a. fulcrum to a lever, d, and as a lever toajaw, b, substantially as described.
