Description

M. J. MELLYN. Felly Plate for Wheels. 6
No. 72,663. Patented Dec. 24,1867.
NvPETERS, FHOTO-LITNOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D. C.
I ni 'tnh tstzs ate-at ffitr t MARTIN J. MELLYN, ()F .ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent Ne. 72,663, dated December 24, 1867.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONOEBN:'
Be it known that I, Meme: J. MELLYN, of Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk, and in the State of Massaehusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mode of Securing the Joints of Fclloes for Wheels; and do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A A represent two parts of felloes for wheels, which meet at the line 1 m. B represents a metallic plate, which is madejust the width of the felloe, and four or five inches in length. This plate has, at its centre, a bolt, C, andon each side of this bolt, a rib, a a. The bolt 0 passes through a. hole made in the felloe, where the two parts join, Near the extremities of the plate B, are holes, and through these and the felloe pass the bolts F F. H represents the usual clip or plate upon.:the inside of thepoint. D represents the tire of the wheel.
The improvement in this case, it will be seen, consists in the use of the plate B with its bolts, for covering and securing the joint of the two parts of the felloe. The plate B is let into the felloe, so that its outer face will be flush with the wood :vt'its ends. When the tire is shrunk on, it fits suugly over the plate B without any jog or elevation. This plate will prevent the giving down of the ends of the felloe, which is now so common in the ordinary wheel.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The metallic plate B, having a bolt, G, and ribs a a, when constructed and used in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 23d day of October, 1867.
