FRIEDRICH A. BLAETTERLEIN, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
Y Letters .Patent No. 72,785, dated December 31, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICE FOB. DRAWING WIKS THROUGH BURNERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: v
Beit known that I, FRIEDRICH A. BLAETTERLEIN, of Westv Meriden, in the county of New Haven, and
State of Connecticut, have inventedv a new audimproved Device forDrawingWicks through the Tubes of Lamp-Burners; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whiohv Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention, lin the burner.`
Figure 2 is a side view ofthe same, detached.
Figure 3 is a. vertical cross-section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new device for clamping and drawing wicks through the tubes of lamp-burners, and consists in the use ot a attened sheet-metal bar, doubled up'in the centre, and provided at one end with teeth for biting the wick, and'perforated to pass over the teeth'ot' the ratchet or'wick-elevator.
It has always been -a considerable annoyance to draw o. wick, especially after the same has once been in oil, through the tube of the burner. Withmy invention it can be done very easily and with great dispatch. The device can be manufactured at a triiing expense, so as to be accessible for all.
A represents a plate', made of sheet metal, and doubled up, as seen in iig. 3, or made of two pieces, connected at one end by a spring or joint, of' suitable construction. Onel or hothfree ends of the strap or straps A are provided with teeth 'a a, as shown in figs. 2 and 3. Holes b b are arranged in the straps, as shown. The wick to be drawn through is clamped by the teeth a, in the lower part .of the device, -as'shown in iig. 3. The plate A is then pushed 'into the lower 'end of the tube of the burner, and is pushed up, until it reaches up through the upper end of the said tube. It is then drawn up, and as it clamps. the wick it draws the same up also. The tube ofthe burner being narrow, the lower ends of the plates A are held together while in the tube, but as soon as they are drawn out of the tube, they spring out and release the wick, which is then drawn out of the upper end of the tubejust far enough.
The holes b b are for the purpose of allowing the apparatus to clear the teeth of the ratchet of the burner, as shown in iig. 3. These holes should'be in single, double, or treble rows, according to the numbery ofratchets arranged in the burner, or they may be slots, extending almost from one edge to the other ot'. the plates or straps. Instead of the holes b, teeth may be arranged on the face of the plates A, to mesh into the Ateeth of the ratchets. v l
I claim as new, and desire to secure byA Letters Patent- The strap A, doubled upon itself, to form two sides, with the teeth a upon their lower ends, when such sides are provided with one or more rows of perforations b, for engaging with the ratchet-wheel in the bnrner, I
whereby the wick is drawn through the latter, as herein shown and described.
F'. A. BLAETTERLEIN.
