TO WHOM MAY CONCERN :y
Be itknownt-hat I, WILLIAM B. TREADw-ELmof lthe city and county of Albany, and wState' of New York, i
have invented :a new and useful Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full,
clear, and exact deseriptionof the same, refereneebeing had to the accompanying drawings, making-a part of this specification, and tothe letters marked thereon, the letters always indicating the same part of thc Stove.
The nature and object of my improveuientare to connect with a'stovc,` either cooking or otherwise,a sifte'r,
by means of which the ashes and other refuse matter may be separatcd'from the coal, which has been partially burned and du'mpedfrom the Ere-chaxnber, orwhich may have passed through the grate holding the fuel within the tire-chamber, without making, any dust or dirt within the room in' which the stove isvsituated, ashcreinaftcr described. The nature and character of my improvement will be better understood by consulting the annexed drawings.
Figurcl of these drawings represents a vertical section through the stove from front to back, showing the fire-pot A,'with its grate C, grated wayB, inclined plate D, ash-pan F, and pan for receiving the coal after sifting,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the grate C', the grated way B, and the inclined plato D, joined together I that they may be vibrated together by one motion.'V
To enable others skilled in the art and trade of constr ueting stoves, to apply, make, and use my improve- In iig. 1, hereto attached, A represents the tire-chamber; a d the france of cast iron, which holds in its place the lining thereof, made of {ire-brick or iron, forming` the fire-chamber, and when placed in position, it forms a rabbct, b, which sustains the backedge of the grate.
Iuthe same figure, B is a grated way, made to conduct the coal into the pan below, as'hereinafter described.
It is hung in front to the frame a a by means of hooks'or rods c c, attached by bolts or rivets d, and behind the hook or rods joined to the grated way by rivets e, which are attachedto a plate, c, placed vertically behind the lire-chamber, by means of rivets-f.
C represents the hre-grate at the bottom -of the hre-chamber, which grat-chas its bearing in 'front upon shaft of iron,'g, which rests upon the gratedvway, and behind upon a rabbet, la.
D, in the drawing, iig. 1, is an inclined plate, attached to the grated way in any suitable manner. Its pnrpose is to receive and copduct the ashes into the pan F below.
I attach the grated way B, the grate C, and the inclined plate D together, that they muy bc ribratcd simultaneously by one motion or one application of force. The ,motion communicated, when constructed -as above` described, is a swinging vibratory motion.
E, in drawings, Figures 1,- 8, and 4, is a pan to receive the coal from the grated way; F, in the same drawings, is a pan to receive the ashes from the inclinedA plate D, after the same have passed through the-'grated way. I'I, in the same figures, represents the hearth of the stove, which is made to swing from the stove, carrying with it the pans E andiF, for the purpose of easily removing the pans with their contents from the stove.
The grate C and the grated way may be used without the inclined plate D, in stoves constructed as represented in iig. 3, and the grated way B may be xed in position, at an angle sufticient for the coal to pass to the coal-pan E, as represented in tig. 4.
The inclined plate D may be made'longer, so as to project over the p an F, as shown at o, in the fig. 1, and
the front oven-plate may be made straight,'as shown at p, in drawing, fig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as my improvement, and as being new and useful,
and what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. I claim the grated way B, substantially in the manner, and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
2. I claim the inclined plate D attachedto the grated way, substantially as described, and for the purposesY herein set forth. v l y 3. I claim the grate C, grated way B, and inclined plate D, in combination, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. I claim the grated way B, the grate C, the inclined plate D, in combination with the coal-box E,the
W. B. TREADWELL.'
ash-pan F, constructed substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
