Description

@uiten gutes gattini @Hire WILLIAM B. 'DUNNINQ o F GENEVA, NEW YORK. Lam Patent No. 72,274, defeat December 17, 1867.
' RAILROAD-GAR VENTILATOR.
TO ALl'J WI'IOM I'l MAY ONCERN:
l Be itknown that I, W ILL1AM B. DUNNING, of Geneva, iny 'thecounty of Ontario. and State of Newr York,
have invented a new and useful Improvement'in -thc Hanging of ll/'in'dow-Sash, Door, or Ventilating-Frames to Cars or other Land Conveyance, die. ;,a'nd Ldo hereby .declare that the -fullowing is a' full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the'art to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ofreferenoe -marked'thereom v The present invention consistsin s'o'hangin'ga window, door,or ventilating-frame within the body of a. car or other land conveyance' thatit eanbe swung in either direction, that is, either on the right or left, according to the direction irl which the car, lte., is moving, or as may be" desired t'o ullow.ventilation, and at the same time prevent the entrance of dust to the-inside'ofthe car. In the 'accompanying plateodrawings my improvement in the hanging of' window o'r other frames is/illustrated- Figure 1 beinga front elevation of a Sash-frame hung according thereto, and
Figure 2 a horizontal section, taken in the plane of the line y y, fig. 1.
A, in the drawings, represents a window-frame, and B a sash-frame, arranged thereto, s o as to be raised and lowered as ordinarily. The sash-frame B is made of two frames, C and D, onetting within `the other, with the glass plate E fixed or secured within the inner one, and snclrinne'r one hung upon one side-or edge, F, by hinges, so as to be swung to open upon the opposite'siile, the movement or swing' thercofbeing limited by a curved arm, G, applied tothe upper edge of" the said frame, and playing through a loop,vH, fixed in the proper position upon the outside frame, and thereon catching by its outer hook-shaped end I. The outer sashrame is hung to the window-frame, upon the opposite side to that by which the inner frame is hung to it, so
that by such outer frame the window can he opened upon the opposite side, the movement being limited, as
before, by a' curved arm, L', and loop M, properly applied and arranged therefor, as before described.
From the above dcseriptionit is plainly obvious, that the window can be opened upon either side, or upon both at once, if se desired, whereby a person is enabled to so adjust them, that while allowing ventilation to the car, the entrance of dust, cinder, Ste., therein, is entirely prevented. A
Although I have herein above described my invention particularly with reference to window-frames, I wish 4it to be distinctly 4understood that Ido not intend to limit myself to such frames, or to any particular style,
kind, or shape of frame to Vwhich it may be applicable or desirable to adapt my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A window, sash, or other frame, made of two frames,'one within vthe other, and hinged or otherwise hung, the inner to the outer and the outer to any suitable frame, so as to be susceptible ofv the operation, substantially as and for the purpose described. i
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 21st day of August, 1867. v
WM. B. DUNNING.
