Be it known that I, JAMES P. TYSON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Carriage- Thill and I'do hereby decl-are'the following to be a full, clear, andexact description ofthe same.
My invention consists oi" a tapering strip ofguin-elastic, or its equivalent, applied toa carriage-thin, as
fully described hcreafter, so 'as to be retained securely in itsplace, and'so that the parts ofthe thill, when connected, are free from all disagreeable rattling. v
In order to enable others skilled in the art tcmalcc and apply my invention, I will now proeeed'to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which` i Figure 1 is apcrspective view of my improved'carriage-thin, showing the manner of connecting the two parts.

The-usual metal bar B is secured to each of the shafts of a carriage, and has at itsinner end e a pin, f, whichl projects on each side of the said bar to a-distanee equal to the width of the coupling-bloekA, as shown in iig. 5I.
Inio'rder to connect the shafts 'to the coupling-blocksthey must be` elevated, as shown in gs. land 4, and so held that each of the pinsj shall-be at one side of and opposite to the circular openings a ot' the couplingblocks. `The pins f are inserted into these openings by moving the shafts laterally, andthe latter are thus moved until the pins are oontainedentirely Within the circular openings, and until the bars B are opposite to the recesses v0l of their'respective coupling-blocks,.(see fig. 2.) The'shafts are then partially lowered, and thereby'turned upon thepinsf as a centre, to about the position shown in dotted lines, iig. 2, or until the shoul-l ders 7L of each ofthe bars are clear'otl the vertical openings 6, the bars entering the recesses d formed for their i reception inthe blocks, as shown in the drawing. vA tapering or wedge-shaped strip,-C, g. 3, of gutta percha or rubber, is then inserted into the lower end of each ofthe openings Z1, and drawn upwards until it is bound tightly between the block and pin f. Its thin end is thenvdrawn over and attached to the bar B by suitable bands z'z', after which the bar-is lowered to the position shown in fig. 3. In thus lowering the bar, the strip C is drawn upwards, and athickerportion caused to bear against the ping, the latter being thus held tightly in its-bearing, and alldisagreeable rattling prevented.
When the two parts Vof. the thill are connected as above'described, the shafts can be raised or lowered to any required extent without danger of disconnecting them', and'it will be impossible to disconnect the thill by jolting, as the projecting portions c and e of the block eiectually prevent all lateral motion` until the shafts are elevated to the proper vertical position, nor can the pinf rise vertically fromits bearing, as 'the open space ,w above the latter is only suiciently wide to permit the passage of the narrowest portion e of the bar.
It willbe evidentfrom the above that my improved thill isas applicable to vehicles having a single `pole 5 i as to those in which the'double shafts are employed.
I claim 'as my invention, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- A-tapering strip, C, of gum-elastic, or its equivalent, secured at one yend to the benl?, and extending between the end of the latter and the -coupling-block, substantially'as and for the purpose described.
