".IO ALL WI'IOM IT MAY GONGERN Be it known that I, BENJAMIN ANYAN, of Fitchville, in the county of Huron, and Stateof Ohio, have `invented a.`new and improved Cultivator; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved cultivator for cultivating plants grown in hills or drills, and it `consists in a novel construction of the same, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the device may be applied to the `front axle of any ordinary farm-wagon. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- 'Figure 'l is a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line x rv, tig. i v

A represents the front axle of an ordinary farm-wagon, B the'wheels, and G the draught-pole, secured by a bolt, between hounds D D, as hsual, (see tig. 2.) E is the bolster, attached to the axle A, in 'the ordinary \vay,.and F is a. drivers seat, having its supports attached to the bolster, and a cross-bar, ax, securcdto a. bar, 11X, between the hounds. In adapting the above parts to a cultivator, the draught-pole C is detached, and another, G, used instead. l This pole G is attached by a pivot-bolt, a, to 'the front yends of two supplemental hounds bib, which are secured by abolt, c, to the front' ends of the hounds proper, D D. By this arrangeinent the draught-pole is allowed an-up-and-down and a lateral play or movement, the latter being for the purpose of guiding the machine, turning it to the right or left quickly, and with facility, which is done by the action of the feet of the driver against a notched segment, E, attached to the rear of' pole G. H H represent the front shovels .of the enltivator, which are attached to standards I I, the upper ends of' the lat-ter being fitted on the bolt c. These standards are braced by chains d d, which are connected to a hook, e, at the front ends di' the hounds b There *ure* two pairs of rear shovels, I J, the standards, K, of which are pivoted inbars L, the latter being bolted to the cross-barafx, and another cross-bar, eX, of the liar 12X. These standards K are braced by chains (ZX, the front ends oi' which are connected to the axle A, as shown clearly in iig. 1. M is a guard, composed of helmet-metal plate, bent or doubled, and perforated at each side. 'lhis guard is .suspended at its front end from the front ends of the supplemental hounds b I1, and suspended at its rear end from the cross-bar eX. The guard prevents -clods of earthbeing cast upon theplants by the shovels.
'It will be seen from the above description that the' parts of the cultivator may, without any diiliculty wha-tever, be applied 'to the fr'ont running-gear of any ordinary farm-wagon, and a eultivator thereby attained-hy every farmer at a veryI small expense, and one which will operatefe'qually as well and answer all the purposes of more pretentious machines. f i i lI claim :is new,` and desire to secure by Letters Iatent y n l 1. The suppleniental hounds b I), Withicthe draught-pole attached, and both` said parts att-ached to the hounds proper, D D, as shown, when said parts are applied to or Vused in connection with the front runninggearV of an ordinary farm-wagon, for the lpurpose specified. v
2. The attachihglot' the standards ILeot' the front shovels H, to the supplemental hounds b Z1, and the .attaching oi' the standards K, oil` therenr shovels J J', to the bars LLQconnected to the hounds lproper DD,
. substantially as and for the purpose set forth` The above specification ol' my invention, signed hy me, this 6th day of January, 1868. l
