TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER Ross, of'Fre'eport, in the county of Stephenson, in the Statev of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improved Wagon-Jack; and I do hereby declare that the following is aA full, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying dra`wings,'and to the letters of referencel marked thereon, making a. part of this specicatiomiin 'which- Figure 1 is an elevation. of Iny invention. l

The natuneof my invention consists in the use of a peeuliarshaped lock, arranged lwith a loop, through which a notched standard is made to passi, and anarm between itand the lever which supports theaxle, for the 'attachment of a latch which holdsI the 'lever in position under the axle; and a lug atvthe opposite side ofthe lock from-.the loop for the attachment of the'lever, 'the whole being conveniently arranged for r'aising the axles of all kinds of vehiclesr i I In order to give a correct understanding of Iuy invention, I have markedvebrrespondiug parts with similar letters,-aud will now give a. detailed description. l

A represents a foot or base-block, which is bolted lfast'to n. notched standard, B, and used to prevent 'said standard from settling in the ground when, sustaining a greatweight. This standard is `made of wood, and witha. series of notches, J, for the support of a loop, F, through whichit 4is made to pass, 'saidv notches being used for adjustinga lever, C, to the height of `an axleto be raised. 'E F iswhat I term' a lo'ck made of' iron, and with a. loop, F, arranged to slide en standard 'B,and rest on either of the notchesJ, and an arm, E, projecting upward to a suitable point, for supporting a. catch, D, to which it is secured by means of' a bolt, III, as a joint. It also has a lug, G, rigidly attached to it, for the support of the lever C, whieh'is -bolted fast, that part of ythe lock, shown at I, being long enough to permit said leverto fit in a seat between 'the'lug G andtlxe arm E. The

lever C also has notches, P P, lite., in which tbo'lcat'ohD is made to operate and hold it in position when the axle has been raised.

The operatiouis very simple, and as follows: The loop F c'an be adjusted on either' of the notches' J by simply raising the arm E up parallel with the lever C, the short end of which can then be pint under an axle, and the end,vB .,-brqught down as at lig. 1, and held iny place by 'the catch D. i
