Description

ALEXANDER WEBSTER, OF SENECA FALLS, NEd YORK.
Letters Patent No. 78,498, dated June 2, 1868.
IMPRVEMENT IN 'APPARATUS FOB. DISTILLING.
@In Sdpmh tuant tu in time itcttns ttent mit making niet nf tige anne.
TO ALL WHOM l'l MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WEBSTER, of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca, und State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Distilling and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to malte and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
`'lhis invention relates to improvements in the processnof distilling, and it consistsin combining a perforated steam-pipe` with a perforated cylinder, through which the steam or vapor passes in its course from the still to the coil, and in connecting therewith a cap, by which the lighter and more volatile portion of the vapor is collected, whcrebytbe process is greatly improved, and whereby two qualities of liquor are obtained, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The improvements herein described have more particular reference to a steam and vapor-cylinder, intended for use in dressing woollen and other cloth, und for-all other purposes to which the same may be adapted, and for which Letters Patent, bearing date November 5, 1867, have been granted me.
The improvements consist principally in the application of a cap to the cylinder, by which the lighter vapor in the process of distillation is collected, and in its general adaptation to purposes of distillation.
Figure 1 represents a vert-ical longitudinal section of my apparatus, showing the parts ofwhich it is composed, and the manner of the arrangement, the section being through the line :c rc, fig. 2. l
Figure 2 is a vertical section of iig. 1, through the line y y.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
i A represents a perforated cylinder, closed steann-tight at -eaeh end by caps, which screw on or are secured in some other suitable manner. Through one of these caps the perforated tnbe'B passes, which tube is connected with the still by a pipe in the ordinary manner` C is the cap, which is attached to the cylinder A, steam-tight, which covers the perforation t-hrough the cylinder. D is a. section of a pipe on the top of the cap, which is connected with a condensing-coil or worm in the ordinary manner. E is a pipe, through which the heavier portion of the vapor is conducted to another condensing-coil or worin. The coils which are thus connected with the cylinder and with the cap may be placed in one cooler, or they may be placed in separate cooling-vessels, asmay be deemed best. The connection of the 'cylinder and the cap with their respective coils, as well as with the still, is seen in red in the drawing. l
For the purpose of insuring a uniform temperature, or for preventing condensation in the cylinder, the cylinder may be submerged in a tank of water or steam, of any required temperature.
By separating the vapor which enters the cylinder' by means ofthe interior tube B, two qualities of liquor are obtained.- The lighter and more volatile and refined portion of the vapor will ascend in the cylinder after being discharged from the tube B, and cn-,ter the cup, from which it escapes to the coil. Condensation in the cylinder may be entirely prevented by subuierging thc cylinder, as before mentioned, in n. tank of water or steam, or by any other means, so that nothing but vapor would escape from the cylinder.
I do not confine myself to any particular method of applying my invention to distilling purposes. v
Having thu's described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The cap C, combined with the cylinder A and the tube B,substantially as and for the purposes described, separating the lighter and more refined portion of the vapor which rises from a still in the process of distillation from the heavier portions, for the purpose of obtaining two or more qualities of liquor, substantially as described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 24th day of December,4 1867.
ALEXANDER WEBSTER.
