,titi tlgttulttttmr tu in their tttters @that mit mating rtttt ttt samt.
To ALL wHoM IT NIAYCONOERN:
Be it knownthat I, DAJYID WEIsnR,'of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Hammer; and I do hereby declare tho following to -be a full, clear, and ezactdescription of the same, reference being had to the adcompanying drawing, and to theletters of reference marked'tliereon. i
V My invention consists of a mode, described hereafter, of securing th handles to the heads of hammers, or
of other tools or implements. i
.In order-to enableothers skilled in the art to make and use my winvention, I lwill now proceed to :describe its construction andoperation. l t 4 t .N
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of .this specification- Figure 1li-s a perspective view of the head of my improved hammer.`
Figure 2, a perspective view of a portion of the h'andle, and the device ,for securing the same to the shaft. t
Figure 3, asection on fthe line 1 2, iig. 1.. I i
Figurl, a section of th'e hammer-head and part ,offthehandle invertedg'fand Figure 5 an inverted plan View of the hammer-head- Similarletters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A is the hammer-headfoi which a is the pole and Z1 the pene; In the under side o f the head is :v -recess, e,
- of the dove-tailed form, best observed 'on reference to iig. 4." YTo the handle, D, ci' thehammcr, is tightly fitted the collar B, from which project the two jaws or cheek-pieces, 'al and d', the ends of the latter being so bevelled as to fltiutothc dove-tailedirecess e, in the under side of the head'. i v
In order to introduce the b'cvellednnds of thecheelr-pieces into the recess, theV latter arecompressed towards ,each other, (the handle, B, not being yet in itsplace,) then deposited inthe recess, and afterwards permitted to t `spring outwards, apart from each other. The handle, D, is'now driven into its place, so as to extend to the end the withdrawal of their ends from the recess? Y Y Y In the pene bis cut an opening, part et'. which, f, is circular, and large enough to adu'iit the head `of au, `ordinary nail. The other portion, 7L, of the opening, is narrow, wide en'oughfonly to admit -the stem of aQnail, and is. bevelled, as shown in iig. 3. I
of the recess iu the head,v and act as a wedge to force the said' cheek-pieces apart from each other, and-prevent The hammer, when used for extracting nails, is applied in the manner, illustrated inlfig. `4, theenlargedh portion,'f, ofthe opening, being placed over the head of the nail, .and the head of the hammer pushedkforwards, so that the head may become wedged in the bevelled portion, L, when force may be applied to the handle, in the `usual manner, to extract the nailt Although I have illustrated and described the device as .'applied to a hammer,`it will be apparent that it p may b'erapplied to other tools and implements,
I claim as my invention, and desire to" secure by'ictters Patent-,
The handle D, collar' B, its 'cheek-pieces d d, with bevelledyends, adapted to the dove-tailed recess e, in the hcadof a'harnmerl o'r other tool or implement, the whole being constructed and 'arranged substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth. f N i y In testimony whereof, I have signed my' name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
