T0 ALL wHoM IT MAY concnmr:`
Be it known that I, L. A. POWERS, of Meriden, inthe county of New Haven, in the State ofConne'eticut,
I 'have invented a' newv and' useful Improvement in Carving-Forks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,` clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing-forming part of thisspecication, in which drawing- Figire 1 represents arsec'tional side elevation of this invention. Figure 2 is a planer top vieiy thereof. l Similar letters indicatecorresponding parts. i This invention consists in a socketl for the guard of a carving-fork, cast 'o1-,otherwise made solid with the Lbolster, but independcntof the fork, andA attaehedto the tang of said fork byuivets or otherwise, in such a.V
manner that the process of producing the fork is materially simplified, and that a durable andl handsoirnc article can be furnished at'a. comparatively low price. l Y i A represents my fork, which is secured in the handle, B,by rivets, or any1-other suitable means.
C is the bolster, -which I produce by castinf.r it from any suitable alloy, or invany`other desirable manner,
either in two halves, as shown inthe drawing, if the fork is provided with a scale-tang, or in one solid piece,
' if the shapeof the tang is such that a-solid bolster can be conveniently used.
Together with the bolster, or with one-half thereof, I form the socket D, for the guard E, in su'ch a manner that saidl socket is made solid with' the bolster, either by casting thcmtogether, or by swaging lor other A means.- Bymaking the bolster and the socket independent of thelfork itself, I am enabled to prodnce'said fork with much' less labor and expense than if the socket is' made solid ,with the.fork,`as usual, and after thev bolster and socket have been cast or otherwise produced in/therequired shape, I secure the same to theptang of the fork by rivets or` otherwise. y i
This invention is applicable particularly to forks of that class for' which a patent was granted to James D. Frary, April 2L-18618, which forks are produced by stamping them out of s'heetsteel; and by making` the bolster end socket solid and independent of the fork, I am enabled to produce `a carving-fork, with avguaid, atv :n comparatively small increase of the price over an ordinary fork; and a fork providedwith my bolster and "socket is just as durable as-a carving-fork of the ordinary kind having,` its socket made solidwith the tang of the fork.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i:s- Making the socket'for the guard of a earvingffork solid with the bolster, or with a portion of said lbolster, und independent of the tang or body of the fork, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
