IMPROVED FASTENING FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.

VTO ALL WHM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that we, BENJAMIN F. ALLEN and J. R.. Brunson, of St. Albans, in the county of Somerset, and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Fastenings of Boot-Heels; and we hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use our invention, we will proceed to describe it.

Figure l represents the front side of the heel, and a sectional transverse view of the shank and upper leather.

Figure 2 is a side viewr cf the heel, and a. sectional view of the shank and upper leather.

Figure 3 is a vertical view of the heel, 'showing its inside structure.

The heel is hollow, and made of brass, or any other suitable composition, in the usual shape, withan opening on the front side, which allows it .to be sprung apart, the better to adjust it to the boot or shoe.

Let a, iig. 1, represent the upper leather, cut off transversely even with the front side of the heel, b the shank or sole, and c the drum, adjusted to the boot or shoe.

The manner of putting on the heel is this: First, having pegged or nailed on the sole, which is made an` eighth of an inch narrower on each side than usual where the heel is to he pegged on, and bevelled on the upper side, so as to leave a. space between the sole and counter, then slide on the heel, which is partially kept in position by the flanges a: x fitting to the edge of the sole. When the heel is in its proper position, the bottom, K, -is then inserted, which is kept in place by the angesff, which are tted to the rim of the heel r. The heel is now pressed together, and the staple dis then driven through the flanges 8 s, on the inside of the heel, into the sole of the boot or shoe, when the whole is securely fastened.

The metallic bottom c may be perforated with holes, and steel corks inserted for the use of log-drivers; and instead of a metallic bottom, one of rubber, or other composition,.may be used, and when one bottom becomes worn it may be removed at pleasure, and a new one put in its place, and thus the same heels may be used and worn upon a great many pairs of boots or shoes.

We claim the heel, consisting of the drum C, the adjustable bottom K, with the staple d, for fastening on the heel, all constructed substantially in the manner described.
