TO ALL WHOM IT hIAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, EPHRAIM HAGKETT, of Concord, in the county of Merrimack, and in the State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chafe-Irons; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the application of chilled cast iron to the making of chafe-irons for vehicles.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use m invention, I will now proceed to deseribeits construction and operation, referring to the ,annexed drawings, which form-a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 is a side view of the chafe-iron attached to a part of the bed-piece, and
Figure 2 is a cross-section;
A represents a part of the bed pfa vehicle.
B is the chafe-iron attached to the same.
The chafe-iron is made of cast iron run? on to a chill, which makesit so hard that wherethe wheel strikes in turning, there is no friction, and thereby prevents the wheel from cramping, and the vehicle turns very lunch easier. 7 v
The iron is made -shaped, and secured to the wagon-body A by a screw passing throughits longest angle. The long angle or under part is first east and placed in a chill, the chafe-iron is then run on to the chill'.
Having thus described my invention, I do not claim the chilling of cast iron, nor. cast-iron chafe-irons; neither do I claim any particular form ofchafe-irons; but v What I do elaim,'and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A chilled-iron chafe-iron for vehicles, substantially as set forth. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto'set my hand, this 22d day of May, 1868.
