LUCIAN HILL, OF NORTH BROOKFIELD, ASSIGNOR TO LAWSON HILL, OF NORTH BROOKFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPnovsD Carmine-CLAMP.
diie .tlpbnle rtfemt tu in time Eaters ndert mit mating pat nf tigt tame.
To ivi-10M' IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known that I, LUOIAN HILL, of North Brookfield, county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot-Crimping Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a ful lcl'ear, and accurate description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l'represents a side'view of my improved boot-crimp`ring clamp, and
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal central section of the same.
To enable those skilled-in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed toes'cribe it more in detail. y
The nature of' my invention consists in the combination of a spiral spring with the operating-nut and jaws of vthe clamp, as will be hereafter described. i I
In the drawings, the screw-spindle A is provided with a n ut, a, the upper side, 1'1,7of which is bevelled or inclined olii` tb fit against the curved surfaces, 2 2, of the jaws B B7 which are hinged or pivoted at b b, between the ears c c of the central jaw-piece O, which is corrugated or grooved out, as shown at cl ol.
The hole e through the jaw part C is made large enough to allow thescrew-spindle A to play loosely therein.
A spiral spring, y,is interposed between the nut a and the shoulders 3 3 of the jaw-piece C.
The rear inner sides of the hinge-jaws B B are grooved out, as shown at 4 4, to ft the screw-spindle A, while their rear outer sides are made with concave or curved surfaces 5 45, as fully shown in the drawings.
Scre`w-spindle A is provided with a loop or ring, D, and with a smooth point, E. l
The operation is asfollows: The screw-spindle A being held in the hand, and the rear of the `jaws B B being compressed upon the spindle A, causes the jaws to open and recede from the pointE of the spindle A, as fully indicatedby iig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
The jaws are opened and drawn back in consequence of bcingforced against the inclined sides 1 1 of'the nut a, which remains stationary during the operation.
The point E of the screw-spindle A is now placed against or in a hole in the crimping-hoard or plate, upon which the upper is arranged in the usual Way, the edges of the upper entering between the open jaws on each side.
The operator now releases the rear ends ofthe hinged jaws B B, when the compessedspiral springf, acting v upon the shoulders 3 3 of the stationary jaw part'C, forces that, together with the hinge-jaws BB, towards the crimping-bar, thereby forcing the inner rear sides of the hinge-jaws B B against the inclined sides ofthe nut a, which causes the front ends gg to close upon and clasp the sides of the upper against the corrugated sides d d of the jaw-piece C.
The operator now, by turning thescrew-spindle A, by means of the ring D, can draw nut a back against the curved sides 2 2 of jaws B B, thereby forcing the jaws closer together, While at the same time forcing them back, and drawing the upper, with great force, into the curve of thecrimping-bar.
My boot-crimping device is very convenient, and can be applied with ease and accuracy, much more so than those heretofore in use.
Having described my improved boot-crimping clamp, what I claim therein as new and of my'own invention,
:and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combi-nation, with the jaw part C, spindle A, and nut a, of the spiral spring, substantially as and 'for the purposes set forth..
2. Thecombination, with thcja-w part C, screw-spindle A, and hingedjaws B B, ofthe spiral springf and nut a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l
3. The combination, with the jaw part C and nut a, of the hinged `jaws B B, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
LUOIAN HILL.
