IMPROVEMENT IN SHOES.
@In rlgthnle referrer tu in there tztisr ndert mit mating gint nf tige rame.
T0 ALL WHOM 1T MAY` coNcERNfY Be it known that we, JAMES S. LESTER and PERRIN H. GAEISWELL, of Knoxville, in `the county of Knox,
and 'in theState of Tennessee, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Shoes; and do hereby declare thatthe following isa. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. v
The nature of ohr-invention consists in the peculiar mode of cutting the front or vamp and side pieces for a shoe, forming the s hoe of three pieces, thereby dispensing with the usual mode of crimping the front or vamp. Also in closing the quarters or side' pieces in the back, from the bottom to the top of the counter, and leaving the rest of the back open from the top of the counter to the top of the shoe or gaiter,`and fastening the same either by lace, buckle, button,'0r any other suitable fastening. Y.
By this arrangement' itis made easy to measure the foot-to secure aperfect ft, and also effects a great saving in time and leather or other material used, as well as dispensing with the useof rubber.
Inorder to enable others skilled in the art to make and use vour invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings,vwhich form a part of this specification, and in Which.- V
Figures 1 and 2 are side views of the shoe, and
Figure 3 is a plan view of the front or vamp of the shoe.
Figures 4 and 5 are side'views of the quarters or side pieces. A
A represents the front or vamp of .the shoe eut, as shown in fig. 3, and Islit open from a to b. It is then bent over the last, the edge fromra to AZ1 forming, with, the edge from h toz' on the side piece C, which is eut, as shown in lig. 5, the `front seam, as shown in lig. 2. The edges btoe and e tof form, with the edges t to k and 7s to Z, the side seam, as showrrin same figures. p
. The side piece B is cut, as shown in tig. 4, and the edges m and n thereof form, with the edges from 'ol to e on the front piece A, the upright seam, as shown in iig. 1. .Y
The backs of the quarters ortside pieces B, and are served together, from the bottom to the top of the counter, the rest of the back being provided .with lace, buckles, buttons, or other suitable device for fastening together. Y 4 I We are aware that cutting the shoe open atthe rear and lacing itnp is notnew. Having thus fully` described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- .lhe front pieeeA and vside pieces B and C, formed in the manner described, for the purpose of forming a shoe, substantially as and for the purposes herein Iset forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we haveh'ereunto'set our hands, this 12th day of May, 1868. JAMES S. LESTER,
PERRIN H. CARDWELL;
Witnesses H. C. TARWATER, S. 1I. JOHNSON.
