TO `ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be itknown that we, GEORGE KING and LYNDIIURSYT T. SHORE, of Frederick City, in the county of Frederick, and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Spouts for Seed-Drills; and wefdo hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a. part of'thisspecification'fin which-v v Figure 1 represents an end view of our seeder, and- Fig-,ure` 2isa side view of the same.
The nakture'ofbur invention consists in the employment of' certain devices, combined and arranged substantiall'yfinnthe manner hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now describe its construction and operation. Y p
` vIn the accompanying drawings, A represents the seed-box, and B the wheels. C is the axle, and D the `vframe, upon the side-piecesof which the seed-box is designed torest. o designates a series of short tubes,
having iangesat their upper ends, which are securely fastened to the bottom of seed-box A. d represents a succession of tubes, intended to convey the grain from e into the lower tubes, F and F', to which the shovels 'i are attached. The upper tube, d, in each series is made suciently large to fit loosely over thelower end of tuberc, towhichit is'pivoted, so as to play with. a forward and backward motion. The second tube d is made to lembracethe lower end of the one above it, and is pivoted in a similar manner. Any number of tubes may 'be aiddedalwa`ys observing the same method-of construction. h represents a series of metal braces, two of which are pivotedA to projectionspon F and F', and R and M. The outer ends of braces I are penetrated by the rodf, on which they can play with a vertical motion. 'c represents a number of pendants, consisting of metal plates, fastened attop to thefront'ot frame D, and bent over at bottom, so as to form an eye, through which ro'dfs made tu pass. m represents a metal rod, bent at right angles near each end, and then bent outwards, to enter the opposite-side-pieces of frameA. To this rod, cords are fastened, one of which will connect the rodf with each bf the tubes, F and R M.V When it is desired to lift said tubes entirely out of groundkthe rod m will be pushed back against the seed-box, and will be held there by spring s. When it is dcs'iredto keep .the tubos F and F., together with tubes R and M, in a given position, a. pin, j, will be thrust over thc top ofthe braces attached to each of' the lower tubes, and through one of the holes made in the projections attached to each of said tubes. `By this arrangementthe plows 'it' will be in condition to perform their otce.
It will-.be observed that the tubes conveying the grain to F and F', being pivoted in the manner above described, will have all the desired flexibility of leather or rubber, and, at the same time, possess greater strength and durability.
The above-.described tubes Lnay be modified in two ways: The first modiication'is exhibited by thetubes,
i which convey the gra-in into the tube R, in which the second tube, u, is hinged to c at top, and sheathedvin tube au, and w sheathed in tube c, which is hinged to tube R. In the second modification, marked M, the tube IZ' will be hinged at top to e, and sheathed in tube 72, which is hinged to M.
We are aware that making seed-spouts in scctions, allowing one section to enter the other, and suspending them by a flexible material, is not new. We do not claim, therefore, this featurerbut v Whtwedo claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv Hng'ing the lo'werfsection of the seed-spoutsP V to the tubes or spoutsR M, as and for the purpose specified. v
In ytestimony'that we claim the foregoing as our own, we aiiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
