IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, JAMES VARLEY, of Hudson City, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in whichi Figure l represents a vertical section Aof a wash-boiler'constructed according to my improvement, and
Figure 2 represents a plan view of the same, with the lid or cover removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to wash-boilers, for cleansing clothing, and other fabrics of similar nature, and it consists inproviding the boiler with a central-jointed tube, projecting from a perforated false bottom, and communicating with anupper chamber with perforated bottom, whereby a current or rapid water circulation is establishedV in the boiler, and a more general distribution of the boilingwater produced Yon and through the rclothing or other articles,I by the generation of steam therein; and it furthermorecon'sists in providing the upper chamber with a vertical adjustment, by .means of a'telescopic or sliding joint in said tbbe, whereby the elevation or depression of thc upper chamber will afford more or less ventilation, as may be desirable, to insure more or less rapidity of circulation. within the boiler, and through the fabricsI therein contained. It furthermore consists in providing the 'false bottom with an effectual means of resisting the upward pressure of the steam from beneath.
vIn order that others may be enabled to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. i
A is a boiler, of circular formation, and constructed of any suitable material. At or near the bottom of this boiler is a false bottom, B,- of an upward convexity of form, having perforations, b b, near its outer edge,
for the passage of the cooler water to the bottom' of the boiler A. This false bottom, B, is kept to its-place by lips p p, attached to the inner wall of the boiler A,wl1ich act against the edge of the false bottom in such manner as to hold it down when the Steam acts against the under side thereof, but is provided with notches, e e, cut in its edge, large enough to pass over the said lips pp, so that when it is desirable to remove the false bottom, for cleaning or any other purpose, by turning it so as to bring said notches directly opposite to and under the said lips or projectionspp, it may b-readily removed. i
Gis a vertical-tube, through which is provided an upward passage for the hot water from below the false bottom when it is forced upward by the generation ot' steam', and has its lower extremity secured to the central portion of the false bottom, B, so as to communicate through the same with the space below, and, passing centrally through the boiler A, communicates with an upper chamber, D, situated within the lid or coverof the boiler, and passing through its bottom, and terminates about the centre of the said chamber D.
This chamber D in the lid or cover is constructed by simply providing the same with a suitable bottom, d, through which the tube C passes, and to which it is secured, and -which said bottom, d, is-perforated with small openings or perforations, e, over its entire surface,'for the downward passage of ,the water which overflows the tube C. The tube C is supplied with a telescopic or sliding joint, a, at or'near its central portion, which not only provides for the entire removal of the lidA orieovcr for insertion or removal of the articles to be cleansed, or for other purpose, but also for effecting a means ofl ventilation to the boiler during the process of cleansing, by a slight elevationof thc cover, and by thus givingmore or less elevation tothe same, the saidventilation may be regulated to any desirable degree. p y
In the operation of this invention, the fabrics or articles toI be cleansed -are placed within the boiler A, upon the false bottom, B, and around the tube C, and-a suilcient quantity of water poured .into the boiler'to completely immerse the fabrics, when the coveris placed thereon, so that the upper portion of the tube C' will t and slide over the lower portion thereof. The said cover is not closed entirely downbut a slight opening is left between it and the edgelof th boiler, for the purpose of giving more variationvv or. difference of temperature between the water above and that below, so as thereby to increase the rapidity of, the" circulation. The heat is applied, in the usual manner, atthe bottom of the boiler, andas soon as the water begins to boil, it rises, and,
passing'up through the tube CB, overiows the sa'mc. Simultaneously with this rise and overiiow' of the boiling water, the cooler water above the false bottom is supplying its-place through the perforations or openings b b of said false bottom, and, in turn, the boiler A is being supplied with valike quantity from the 'upper chamber,- D, through the perforations c of its perforated bottom, d, and thus a. continuous current is k'ept up through the boiler .A and the articles therein contained. v y
, What I claim as my invention, and desire to have secured by Letters Patent, isf Y Y 1. The central-jointed tube C, perforated upper chamber D, vand false bottom, B, in combination with each other and with a. wash-boiler, substantially as herein described.
2. The telescopic or sliding joint a, in combination with the central-jointed tube C, for adjustment of the upper chamber D, or removal of the cover, substantially us herein set forth.
3. The combination of the lips p p and notches e e, for locking in place the false bottoni of the wash-boiler, substantially as specified.
' JAMES VARLEY.
