Letters Patent No. 81,868, dated September 8, 1868.
IMPROVED APPARATUS FOR REGTIFYING SPIRITS.
the fitlgttult nftmh it in flan fitters new mt making out at flge same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, W. G. BARETTE, of Canton, in the county of Baltimore, and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rectifying-Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my apparatus, and
Figure 2 represents a sectional elevation of the same on the line a: x of fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts. i
The object of this invention is to provide an improved apparatus for rectifying alcohol, whereby the lowwines may be condensed, and returned for re-distillation, and the volatile oils separated with greater facility than can be done with the apparatus now in use I It consists of an arrangement of condensing-chambers and a cooler, for separating and returning the oils.
Also, of a condensing and returning-apparatus, for the low wines; and, I
Also, of an arrangement for taking ofi' the low-wines at the latter part of the operation.
A represents the still, upon which is erected the vertical cylinder B, divided into the several compartments 0, D, and E, through which the vapors are passed, for the purpose of separating the several qualities.
F represents a cooler or refrigerator, into which water is supplied by the pipe G, for the purpose of producing the proper temperature in the chambers D and E, for condensing the oils which arereturned again to the still throughthe pipes H and I, which temperature I find most desirable to maintain at about 174 Fahrenheit, towards the latter part of the operation.
K represents a pipe, for conveying the surplus water from the cooler F into the still. It is provided with anair-vent, L, which also serves for the insertion of a thermometer, to indicate the temperature in the cooler F.
M represents a pipe, for drawing oif all the water from the cooler F when the operation is over.
N represents the pipe for carrying over the-vapors, the first portion of which I propose to convey into an ordinary condenser, and thence into a worm, from which I convey it to the receiver 0, to be conveyed back again into the still through the pipe P, for the purpose of re-distilling, and thereby converting into alcohol.
After these light wines have passed'over, and the heavier portion succeeds. the nine Pmay be closed, and the products conveyed into a tub or receiver, Q, as shown in red.
R represents a cock, for closing the passage upward through the cylinder B towards the close of the operation, when the light and impure wines incident thereto begin to rise, and
S represents a lateral tube, communicating with a worm, T, into which I cause the said residue to flow by opening a cock in the said pipe. p
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure .by Letters Patent- The combination, with the still A, of-thc cylinder B, provided with the condensing-chambers D and E, refrigerator F, and pipes-H and I, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The arrangement of the supply-pipe G, discharge-pipes K and M, the air-tube L, and refrigerator F, substantiallyas and for the purpose described.
The receiver 0, provided with a pipe, P, communicating with the still, for returning the light wines, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The combination, with the cylinder B, of the stop-cock It, tubes S, and worm T, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of myinvention signed by me, this 21st day of July, 1868.
I W. G. BARETTE.
