Be it known thatI, PETER GEISER, of Waynesboro, in the county of Franklin, and Stat-eef' Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a. Writing-Table and Chair combined; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in whichy Figure 1 is a perspective view of a. c hair with my invention attached thereto.

Figure 2 isI a perspective view of the lower portion ofthe table, which constitutes the receptacle for books, or papers, or ladies work', and which also shows the receptacles for ink and pens, or other articles used `in writing. V A

Figure 3 is a view of the undenside of the cover or swinging portion ofthe table, showing also the extensionframe for holding books or papers, and the pivot upon which said table turns, which serves also as a. lock for securing said cover in its position with reference to the receptacle beneath it.

Figure 4 is a sectional elevation, showing a portion of the table, and of the extension-frame, with its elevated portion in position.

Figure 5 is a view of the key with which the swinging portion of the table is secured tothe receptacle below.

Figure 6 is a central sectional elevation of the socket-joint, which unites the fifth leg or table-support to the chair, upon which -the entire table may be turned in anyre'quired direction.

The same letters in all the figures indicate identical parts.

This invention relates to a device, which is to be attached to a'chair of suitable construction, and which, when so attached, constitutes a table or support, upon which to place paper for writing, or books-for reading or copying, or it may be used as a: work-table, or for any other purpose to which it isl adapted.

The invention consists Ain the construction and combination of the parts, as will be fully described hereafter.

A is'a chair, of any'suitable construction, to which is attached the socket C. I

B is the fifth leg-of the chair, or support to the table, and is inserted into the cavity formed in the lower end of the socket C; its use being'to prevent the possibility of any weight, which may be placed upon the table, upsetting the chair or tilting it in the direction 'to which the -table points. v

C is a socket-joint, made of metal, as is shown in g. 6 of the drawings ou an enlarged scale. This socket is secured to the chair by screws, which pass through its projecting ange,`and into the under side of the chair.

D is an arm, of metal, having upon its lower end a. round portion, of suitable size and length to fit into a hole mede in the upper end of the socket C. This arm is also provided with a. shoulder, which rests upon the upper end of the socket C, which shoulder forms the bearingsurface upon which the arm and its pendent table rest.

E is` the lower portion of the table, which is composed of a Hat bottom, having secured to it a rim of, say, four inches, more or less, in height, which rim diverges,as it extends upwards, so as toform, when connected with the bottom, a pan-shaped receptacle, the whole being secured to the top of' arm D in such manner as to turn freely with said arm; This section of the table is provided, in its interior, with a. division-plate, which divides, from the main portion, a small portion of its surface, which part is redivided into smaller compartments, for the reception of an inkstand, pens, and an eraser, or any other articles used in writing, or in ladies work, such as spools of thread, needles, buttons, and various other articles.

F is the cover to the receptacle above referred to, which is pivoted to the same by mcans'of the slotted and grooved disk K, which is secured by means of screws, passing through bars or projections formed thereon,l and into said cover.v To the under side of` this cover is secured the extension-frame G H H, 'as clearly shown in figs. 3 and 4.

G is a bnr or plate, of metal, which is secured to the cover ofthe table, and which receives the outer ends of two tubes of metal, H H, which are secured thereto, at a distance of, say, eight or ten inches apart, and parallel with each other.

H H are the tubes of metal, above alluded to, the inner ends of which are secured to the table-cover with screws.

I is a frame, of wire, which is so formed that it has two parallel sides, connected, by a cross-bar, in such a. manner that the two parallel bars thereof will fit and slide into the tubes H H, as above described. This frame I has, extending across from one side-bar to the other, a wire or series of wires, twisted together, or otherwise formed slides, for a purpose which will hereafter be described.

K is the disk, which is secured to the under side of the table-cover, and upon which it (the cover) swings. This disk also serves as a lock for locking the cover in position; this result being attained by boring a hole into one side of the disk, and fitting a bolt thereon, which bolt is operated by means of a key, which moves said bolt out or in, and causes it to engage thc catch a upon the lower portion of the table.

L is the key, above referred to, which may be of the construction shown, or of any other that will move the bolts i I a is the catch-piece, secured to the inner side of the lower portion of the table, or to a piece of metal screwed thereto, for the purpose as shown in fig. 2 ofthe drawings.

-b is the bolt, which works in the disk, as above stated, and which passes into a slot cut in catch a, thus securing the cover F in its closed position.

c c are slides, working upon the side-bars of the frame I, as above described, and are designed to be used, one for holdingr the frame in the position shown in fig. I, in which position it is placed when it is used as a support for any papers that it may be desirable to copy,'or for a book, or for any similar purpose.

When in the position above referred to, the inner slide c is dropped over the point of the table-cover, which is made heart-shaped for the purpose. The slide c is used to hold the papers while being cpied, and as soon as one line of the page has been copied, the slide is moved down upon the page, so as to cover saidline, thus affording a great convenience, by directing the eye always to the words to be written.

d is a set-screw, which passes through the portion c ofthe socket-joint, the end entering a groove formed in the internal part D, to prevent said part being unintentionally detached from the outer portion.

c is a compartment of the receptacle E, which is intended to receive an inkstand, f.

fis also a receptacle, also formed in the lower section of the table, for the reception of pens or any other materials used in writing. v

-g is another compartment, for similar purposes and is arranged the same as those above described.

h h are stops, placed within and attached to the interior of the receptacle E, and arranged in such a. manner that, as the cover F of the table is turned either way, the arms of the locking-device come in contact with said stops, and preventthc further movementof the cover in that direction.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination of the chair A, socket C, leg B, arms D, and table E F, substantially as shown vand described. l 2. rllhe construction of the table, as composed of the parts E F, substantially as shown and described.

3. 'lhc paper and book-holder, as constructed, consisting of the parts G, H, H, I, e, and c', and their equivalents, substantially as shown and described.

4. The combination of the paper and book-holder with the cover of the table, substantially in the vmanner shown and described.

5. The arrangement of the locking-device K, catch a, and stops h, substantially as and for the purpose described. 1
