L. H. MAUDELBAUM,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 84,641, elated December 1, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUTED TRIMMING.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part' of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, L. H. .MAUDELBAUM, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Compound Fluting, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a face view of my improved fluting.
Figure 2, a section, taken as indicated by the line a: x,- and Figure 3, a section parallel to fig. 1, taken as denoted by the line y y in fig. 1:
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding I parts.
My invention consists in the production, as a new article of manufacture, of a fluting that may be used for shirt-bosoms and various articles of dress, and which is of a compound character, being made of regularly-termed large flutes, in contradistinction to crinkled or irregularly-shaped surfaces, bounded on either side by a series of small flutes, and these again bounded by flattened borders,'said article being thus formed prior to laundering or washing.
Referring to the accompanying drawinga to represent the flattened bordersvor portions of my compound fluting, with a series of small flutes b 7) arranged along the inside edges of such flattened borders or parts, and c c, the regularly-formed large flutes disposed to lie between the small flutes.
Rows of stitching, (Z (I, may be run along the flattened borders, or independent strips or tapes stitched thereon, to hold the flutes in shape.
Such compound fluting may either consist of a single row of large and small flutes, with flattened borders, or of a series of such rows lying parallel to each other.
The same may be made by mechanism of any suitable kind, so as to deliver the article in a completed formready for market or wear withoutlaundering. Thus it may be made by passing the fabric or material through between heated rollers shaped-to form, in a regular and straight order across the fabric, relatively to its feed, the large flutes c c, with straight-line depressions c 0, between them, and at the same time to formthe series or several series of straight small flutes b b, likewise-the flattened borders a a.
V The regularity of the large flutes c 0, divided by the straight-line depressions c e, constitutes an important feature in this flirting, but only by way of contrast, or as combined with the similarly-formed, as regards regularity, small flutes I) I), such large flutes c c, in the finished article, bearing no resemblance to an irregularly-pufl'ed or crinkled surface between small regularformed flutes, and which irregularly-pufled or crinkled surface cannot be made by rollers, but requires the agency of special and peculiar guides to produce, and
whereby the article so produced is'a puffing as distinguishable from a flirting.
What is here claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, isa The within-described compound fluting, made of muslin or other snitablejmaterial, and composed of large, regularly-firmed flutes c 0, divided by straightline depressions e c, and bounded on either side by more numerous and smaller flutes b I), having flattened borders a a exterior to them, substantially as shown and described.
L. H. MAUDELBAUM.
