To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES B. THAYER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy-Guns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,`and exact description of the same.

This invention relates to improvements in toyguns, whereby it is designed to simplify and cheapen the same, and to arrange them in such a way that they will not be as liable to get out of order as those now in use.

In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a toygun, constructed according to my improvements;

A represents the barrel, which may be formed together with the stock or handle B, in one piece, or separately, and attached thereto in any suitable manner, and of wood or any other suitable material, and

provided with a slot, G, on the under side.

D represents a flat spring, for throwing the rod, or other article to be used in shooting, which I propose to secure by one end, E, to the gun, near the breech, by passing it through the slot, and securing it in a hole prepared for it at the bottom of the barrel, as represented in lig. 1, or it may be bent into the form represented in fig. 2, and secured to the under side of the barrel by screws, or other means of securing itA may be employed, as preferred.

'lhe spring to be so secured, I propose to bend, or

`otherwise so shape that the other end, F, will project through the slot, and press against the upper surface of the interior of the barrel suicientlyto hold it in the retracted position, the said end being slightly bent forward, and sharpened for the purpose, and, if preferred, or found necessary, the surface of the barrel may be roughened, or grooved, to cause it to holdthe spring, or a notch may be formed therein, as represented in tig.,1, at G.

To discharge the part F of the` spring against the rod, the finger may be placed within the loop of the spring, and pulled against the part H, by which the upward pressure ofthe end F against the barrel, which causes it to adhere, will be released, and the end will ily forward to the end of the slot. It may be set by forcing the rod down the barrel against the end of the spring, or it may be drawn back by placing the finger in front and pulling it back.

`The spring may be drawn back any desired amount within thel range of the slot, and will be held at any point at which it is stopped in the backward movement, and when discharged, will give a blow corresponding in force to the distance it is moved back in being set.

It is sometimes desirable to combine with the spring, or other means for throwing the rod, a hammer' for striking a blow, for the purpose of exploding caps, or other detouat-iug-material to make a noise resembling the discharge of fire-arms at the same time that the rod is discharged by the said-spring.

In iig. 3, I have represented an arrangement where.- by a hammer, I, may be actuated by the spring D, the said hammer being pivoted to the barrel or to the stock at K, and shaped Iso, that a pin, L, secured to the spring below the-barrel will take into a slot M, so formed that when the spring is retracted it will raise the hammer, and when discharged will throw it down with force ou the nipple.

By the simple arrangement herein described au effective toy-gun may be formed complete, of two pieces, when the hammer is not employed, and in either case the expense of a catch and trigger for holding and discharging the spring, saved. Moreover, the spring is arranged in the form of a trigger-guard, both ends being protected, and so conned that there are uo projecting parts liable to catch and break.'A I propose to make the barrel and stock of wood, and in onevpiece, but the barrel may be made of metal, if' preferred, and joined on to the stock in any suitable manner.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

'lhe spring D, combined with the barrel A, and arranged so that it is held iu the position for discharging by the contact of one end thereof with the interior 'surface of the barrel, and may be discharged by pulling on the part- H, substantially as and for the purpose described.

Also, the combination with the spring D and the barrel, of a hammer, I, when actuated by the said spring, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
