j `Be it known that I, L, l?. GARNER, of` Ashland, in

the county` of Schuylkill, and `State of Pennsylvania,

haveinvented a new and improved Machine'for Separating Slate `from Goal; and I do hereby declare that l the following is afull,` clear, and exact description thereof, which willl enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same; reference being had to the accompanying d rawings, formingpart of this speci cation. g y

l vThis invention relate-sto improvements in machinsigned to accomplish the same more economically than can be done byany means vat present -in use.

The invention consists in an arrangement of circular grate upon a horizontalaxis, the bars of which are of peculiar form, especiallyvadapted to the purpose, through which the coal is cansed'to pass, together with certain devices, to prevent the'same from as hereinafter more fully specified.

To prevent rthe coal from cloggingv the kspaces between the grates, I provide a roller, B, havingdisks which will allow it to `recede if the coal be wedged too tightly to be forcedv out by it, after which it will be again drawn up toits Work. y

I preferto place cams e, upon the exterior of the grate-bars forraising the roller and lcomb-bar, to Vall'ow them to fall back to impart 'shocks to the grates j for detaehing lumpsl of coal that may wedge between the grates. l

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentf f v l. A coal-screen, composed of the circular gratebars A, `constructed as described, and arranged for rotation, substantially as specified.
